Just a giant clusterBleeped text of tiny states, one can only imagine the amount of immigration fees one has to pay if you want to just visit your aunt 100 km away :)

Afaik largely only good where subject to fees…

When the Reichstag handled the imminent threat of Vienna to the Turkish forces in 1529, their help culminated in a declaration that all aid going to Vienna should be exempt from tolls. :-)

To give them honor, they also organized military aid, but beaurocracy already ruled supreme back then.

You gotta love the fact that the 1803 map was the simplified version!

Thats what I like about history, the constant shifting and changing attitudes of life in general. The way one country's borders move and the creation of others. The way nations are supressed and manipulated. I studied German to A level and travelled through from east to west and north to south. I met an old guy on the German/Polish border who had formerly lived in the then German territory of Poland but had been moved out of his home which had been confiscated after the war of 39/45. Change has to happen and that's what intrigues us. We're now experiencing a period of relative stability but that isn't to say things wont change. Steve

Here's a other interesting site about the territorial evolution of Germany (and Europe and the Benelux) :
