A very quick duel in WoW/G between two aces (Hawker and Richthofen) led to this AAR in my blog, I hope you enjoy it:

Super looking terrain to fly over. How did you make your smoke marker?

Thanks James, the terrain mat is one of Terrain Mat's World War One trench systems: terrainmat.com

The smoke is basically cotton wool pulled out and sprayed black, with yellow and red flames painted at the base. I use them for WW2 knocked out tanks, but they seem to work as smoke markers for WW1 planes as well! The spray stiffens the cotton wool, so it is quite pliable.

Very nice! I thought Hawker would pull off the upset, but alas, history repeats itself.

Thanks Texas Jack, I was hoping for a victory as well, it was close, maybe next time…

Nice AAR. Terrain looks really good and the smoke is well done.

Thanks Leadlair76, I appreciate all the kind comments!

Cool report, thanks! Love the mats, but just checked, pricing and shipping to the US is OUCH! anyone know of a similar manufacturer in the US?

Abwehrschlacht30 Dec 2012 3:43 p.m. PST

Yeah RazorMind, they are quite costly, I bought mine when I had a bit of spare cash floating about, oh how times have changed! They come very highly recommended though, good luck finding one in the US!

You can get free downloads of Terrain Mat artwork from The Aerodrome site:

Only problem is that you have then got to get them printed.

My link is to The Aerodrome forum page but I can't remember exactly where the mats downloads are. An enquiry on the General Discussion forum will soon yield the necessary info.

Nice game report – plenty of photos and not too much text – I'll be looking out for more on your blog. This contest would be a good one to play using the very serviceable solo rules which I also found on The Aerodrome but which originate from The Tyneside Wargames website:

Here is a link for one at The Aerodrome – link

Also, here is a link to for a place to get one printed – link

Thanks for the comments Doug, is it better to have more photos and less text in posts? I was discussing this the other day with my mate and it seems that AARs are the most popular posts, but I'm not sure about how much written content to put in.

I didn't know about the artwork downloads, but I bet printing them would be almost as costly as getting one made. The mat I have is slightly 3D with what appears to be wood glue used to make the trenches and roads etc, which you wouldn't get with a printed version, obviously…

I also did have a look at the solo rules through another thread here on TMP, they look very good, but I have yet to try them. This game was actually played at the end of a gaming session when the first game ran out quicker than expected due to an explosion card!

Thanks for that ajbartman, the mats look pretty good.

Cool.
I must get around to playing a game of WoW one day.

If you are wanting to go cheap, make your own mat. Thought I had some pictures of mine. Will try to get some the next few days.

When it comes to AARs, I'm definitely in the "one picture is worth a thousand words" camp. I soon lose interest in a detailed description of dispositions, moves, terrain etc whereas a decent photo with a short commentary keeps me interested. Others prefer the opposite so it's your choice in the end.

Anyway, I'll be interested to seeing what you come up with next – maybe I should do my own AAR. I did take some photos of a game a while back but they were a bit boring so I messed with them a bit and ended up with this:

Thanks Trailape, I always have a nosy at your entertaining blog, I'd like to see some WOW/G content on there some day…

I'd like to see the pictures of your mat Ajbartman, looking forward to it!

Doug, thanks for the feedback. I think I settled on the idea of more pictures than words, I too have little interest in wading through army lists and the like. A few good photos of the action and the idea can be taken in quickly!

I like the idea of a video AAR, very entertaining and well done! I actually have an Gotha AAR coming up in a few days from the same day as this last post, I'll link it on here when I publish it!
