The command stand for Hannibal is now complete and I am very pleased with the result.

Originally, I had planned to populate Hannibal's command stand with other interesting characters – a Greek historian, a standard bearer and even other decorated army commanders. But after painting the models I thought the scene of Hannibal alone beneath a tree with his horse patiently waiting and his shield propped up against the tree trunk to be more appropriate.

Painting and building command stands is one of my most favorite parts of this hobby.

Thanks for visiting. Comments and feedback is always welcome. Figures are 28mm by Relic Miniatures.

Well done. Tree is cool too.

Very nice work, but not sure about the giant rock on the base.

Good idea – will try and match your excellent work but may use a Woodlands Scenic tree with foilage. Afterall the Great Man deserves some shade!

Looks great. Hannibal looks like he's prepared to take zero BS from anybody.

@ The Editor: Thanks for the feedback. I wanted Hannibal to be elevated above the normal height of the other models of the army on the table. That was my thinking with using the rock.. plus it gives it a natural feel rather than building up a hill using some crafting material. Maybe execution could have been better.

@ Garry: I originally thought to use a tree with foliage, but decided to only hint at the larger tree and leaves with the trunk and a few of the lower branches. Good luck with yours :)

Neat idea, I am with the editor, the rock on the base seem off ballance for some reason.

Very well painted, good job. I was guessing about the tree roots, would a tree grow on a large rock?

Jonathan J20 Dec 2012 6:53 a.m. PST

@LorenzoMele: I have often been out in the woods and mountains and have seen large trees growing right out of large rocks – it is really quite remarkable.

Neat idea – "Hannibal and the horse he rode in on" – great looking

Great painting

I see the point about the big rock – while it looks great I might have thought about filling in the gap between the rock and the stand (as if it were part of, say, a stony ridge)

And I agree that nothing can stop growing vegetation!

Love the figures. hate the rock (and the tree). I just can't stand terrain that moves around with the figures.
