We were playing our 2nd game of CY-6 today. Early WWII Zeros and Wildcats. All 6 of the Wildcats went for my flight of 3 Zeros. On the 3rd turn we had our first fire. Then of course we plotted for turn 4. I broke my formation up trying to line up shots on the swarming cats. All of my pilots were 1s and moved first. I plotted two of them into the same hex…. Then failed the air crew check. This started a bunch of damage to debris checks. Since most of the planes on both sides were within 3 hexes of this "bump" and the rest were at 4 hexes a lot of debris checks were made. At the end of checking there was one Zero left in the air and it was on fire and ….. ( it had taken 8 checks) No shots were fired that turn. The lone Zero failed the next crew check and went down. I think 3 pilots safely hit the silk.

Just another lovey day of dice rolling.

That's IF they wore parachutes. Sometimes they went up without them.

Don't ask me why, I've been reading about the Japanese airforces for the last two years and many things they did I don't understand.

A short game, but one that you will remember.

Hmmmm, I can see several possible reasons:

1. Code of Bushido, and not wanting to appear like a defeatist, so wouldn't want to wear one – surely, the pilots won't be shot down, if they make up their minds to be victorious. Also gives them a bit more incentive to be aggressive, knowing they simply can bail out when desired.

2. Lack of supply/availability for the pilots.

3. Added weight to the plane, and might make it a bit less comfortable during the fight, distracting the pilot.

4. Perhaps they were expected to ram any enemy aircraft, vessels, vehicles, supply dumps, etc., in order to make the ultimate sacrafice – see item #1.

All of the above is conjecture on my part, but does fit with some of the stances they took during the war.

Not sure if it applies to their Air Force, but does to their pilots fighting American naval forces.
