I think they are either mines (improbable – too large, I think) or the 'survival pods' the Germans dropped in the sea as a refuge for downed airmen

If survival pode they are the wrong colour – they should be bright yellow for air-sea rescue to locate them easily |

They do appear to have ladders on the sides, so the survival pod thing seems likely. Could be some other sort of buoy, I suppose, but then I would think the ladders would run the other direction. Whatever they are, I always dig those big seaplanes for some perverse reason, and the weirder the better. e.g. I absolutely LOVE the Bv 138. Doug |
