I've started my African imaginations project (painted up part of a presidential guard battalion over the weekend) and I was wondering if there were any Soviet prop planes engaged in any COIN operations in Africa during the 70s. I know there were American and Brit prop planes and Russian and French helos, but I haven't seen anything about Soviet prop planes. I've got a Texan and a Chipmunk for some airpower. I might even get a P-51 and a Corsair, but a YAK or something would be interesting. I know I can do whatever I want but I am curious if any real African airforce flew old Soviet props. Thanks.

Pretty sure there are some An-2 Colts (big Bleeped text single prop transport bi-plane) flying around, and I won't be surprised some are modified to drop bombs, but probably no WW2 era Russian fighters that you are thinking of.

The An-2 Colt, seen all over Asia, Africa and even Andover Airstrip!

Tally Ho!

Definitely AN-2 Colts as the others have said. Robert

Thanks. Sounds like just the thing to provide air support for a T-34.

We did a couple of trips the An-12 'Hurcule-ski,' the Soviet verson of the C-130 in '77. Several twin engine An-24s were in Angola, see link

The Li-2 "Soviet Dakota" was around as well, maybe one or two became puff the magic dragon gunships in certain imagi- nations ;)

I I am also fairly sure the Yak 18 trainer was used in Africa and like the t6 could have been used for COIN work.

Also chinese built a lot of older Russian gear, I am sure some may have found it's way to Africa….
