28mm Darkest Africa After Action Report on my blog with photos. I ran a game between African spearmen and Arab slavers today in St. Louis, MO metro area. The upshot is I need more trees. Particularly palm trees and jungle. That is another project for next year!

I've been playing around with similar ideas.
I use the old rules with a few adaptations. I also differ from you in that I use 15mm miniatures.
You can do alot in the way of flora with aquarium plants. I get packs of the tall ones and cut them up to base on coins. I think you might be able to get some palm trees cheap from Bakery Crafts. And don't forget that the jungle has hardwood trees. Woodland Scenic do some for not all that much. And plenty of green lichen. That's what I use and some of it looks a bit large for my 15s. So they'd probably be just right for 25s.
