There's a chance I may be relocating 'up north' middle of next year, so as part of the essential house-hunting research, are there any wargaming clubs (historical, who welcome 40+ grumpy old gamers) in the Sheffield-Manchester-Leeds triangle that meet at weekends?

Most of the obvious candidates seem to have mid-week meetings which are not ideal, as I'm often far from home on weekdays, so all suggestions welcome!

Plan B: make sure the new place has space for an 8x4 table for weekend gamers to visit!

I can recommend maws.org.uk who are open on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Sundays in the month. There's usually someone there about 12:00 but the hall is available earlier if there's a key holder involved.

Maltby and District (Maltby is in South Yorkshire, near the border with Nottinghamshire) meet up on a Sunday from around 10 till 4-5, with two large gaming rooms available to them. However, if there really are 40 of you they might need an extension…

Hi, I can definitely recommend Barnsley Association of Wargamers in well you guessed it Barnsley, We meet every Monday evening and Saturday afternoons with Sundays being another possible opening time.
Here,s our web site and you can find the forum we have from there as well barnsleywargames.co.uk
Most of us are 40 something grumpy gamers so you may fit in perfectly.
Hope to hear from you.

Pennine Raiders in Halifax normally meet on a Wednesday evening, but had their first Sunday afternoon gaming session yesterday, with a mixture of Flames of War, Saga, Bolt Action, and 40k.

Plan is to do it at least once a month, if there's enough of an interest.

Well, the advance guard report minimal resistance and the natives seem friendly so far…it'll be some weeks yet till the toys are unpacked and a table assembled (it seems that Ikea wardrobes take priority) but an update seems timely!

Thanks to all for your recommendations, I'll be contacting all the clubs mentioned in the coming weeks – I'll start in earnest at Triples (Sheffield) next month, assuming that some of the clubs mentioned are participating at the show.

Me? 40-something gamer (only 1, Phil!), mainly been playing ancients (DBM) and 19th century colonial (big battles and skirmishes), some Napoleonic and ACW, recently but open to new ideas, although the interest tends to wane after 1914 or 'fantasy' (though I'm strangely drawn to the idea of Victorian Sci-Fi/SteamPunk type games).

In due course, I'll be able to offer a table and hospitality but for now, where should I look for like-minded grumpy not-at-all-old gamers?

Meant to add, although the title of the post mentions Yorkshire, anywhere within a 40-mile radius of Sheffield (say, within 1 hour's drive)would be good…which makes Manchester a definite possibility and even Nottingham might be 'do-able' if the M1 behaves.

(I now anticipate several posts from our US cousins expressing equal amazement that there are at least 8-10 wargames clubs within 1 hour's drive of home, and that we're preapred to drive 'only an hour' for a good game!

There are six clubs in Leeds that I know of, so if your looking for an single hours drive from Sheffield, I'd expect at least 60 clubs to choose from.

Wakefield & District Wargamers meet once per month on Saturdays Simon, the remaining weeks it's on a Monday. Mailed fist in Hyde (twice a month) is indeed an option too.

If all else fails I am actually in the process of converting a games room and the plan is for a decent-sized table…
