Some time ago, I began building the components for a modular RoboRally board using Sketchup, so when a discussion came up about bases for 15mm minis, I went back and converted some of those parts into round, 12mm-diameter bases. These are pretty thin, so my thought was that they could be glued to a steel washer or magnetic paper, and then the mini could be mounted on them. It would require the modeler to cut off the base, though, which can be a real pain. If a manufacturer made minis with no base, but rather a peg coming out of one foot, that would be ideal, but no one does that.

Here are some pics of the bases. Any ideas as to how this could be done with a minimum of inconvenience to the gamer?

Thanks,
jav98

Love this stuff, Its pretty specific obviously ( def a good portrayal of fighting within a ship or building) But its a great idea:)

I really hate figures with bases that "cart" bits of terrain around with them …

I like them, I find pre-textured bases useful in larger scales, but I've never seen the concept tried in 15mm. I hope that you can can come up with a decent way to attach them, and deal with those pesky integral bases. (unfortunately, I have no ideas to contribute)

I do wonder if the one with the raised console might look strange if repeated on multiple bases in an army. (also, the english lettering on some bases may overly restrict which armies and setting they can be used for)

They would be great to have in theory. I know that I personally hate using my textured gravel bases when I'm playing Guncrawl-style games in rooms and corridors.

But in reality… I wonder how many 15mm collectors would take the time and effort to cut off the integral bases? Offering these on Shapeways instead of ordering a production run is probably your best bet… they can be bought on-demand when someone actually decides to go through the extra effort.

I agree with Chris K. These are nice, but I'll have to stick with the generic sand/gravel textured bases.

I could see clipping of the integral base on a select handful of minis, but I certainly wouldn't do a lot.

Part of the reason that there is always a cast-on base on 15mm figures is to help them cast!

Even the 1/100 figures included in the Gundam kits I've bought had integral bases.

People who use thin bases like Khurasan or AB are fairly easy to remove, but heavier bases like Flames of War minis are real killers to remove. Only took the cast-on bases off of ~3 minis for Flames, they were all for the cast-resin objective base. I don't want to do that again.

Agreed they would be a pain in the arse to remove from bases, however the Khurasan ones arn't that bad to do. I'm very tempted by these for my HAZMAT and scietists.

Most of the Martin Baker sculpts sold by Rebel Minis are also pretty thin in the base. The old Laserburn and RAFM ex-Traveller figures are too.

You might be able to use some of these with the more consistently-shaped basing available, like Oddzial Osmy (typically a square/rectangle) or GZG and Micropanzer (uniform circles).

The more I think about it, the more I'm interested in trying this on just a handful of special-use figures.

Well, there again, I was adapting these from an industrial/factory tile set. It would be pretty easy to make them for city streets, brick sidewalks, etc., as well. No reason to make them for natural scenery, of course.

infojunky07 Dec 2012 7:31 p.m. PST

I would consider them, but their 12mm…. if they where in 15mm or 19mm (3/4s of an inch, or the size of a penny) I might.

Though I really am a plain neutral colored base sorta guy…

I have to agree, it would be a pain taking some of the minis off to remount them.
How about leaving an area of space on the bases to glue the mini on, more like a plinth etc?

republic of tolworth08 Dec 2012 6:16 a.m. PST

Agreed on the size factor. If they were made a little larger to fit 1p coins that would be better. More room to mess about with as well.

Still like them though.

Very nice idea!

I like the idea and the look. What if you left a small retangle inset to insert the figure. You would only have to clip the bases to fit. Between the legs(at the base) would still be flat/no texture though….

SpaceJacker12 Dec 2012 4:12 p.m. PST

These look great. However I found when attempting the same thing via sculpted bases for 15mm figures, that attaching the figure (by first hacking apart the integral base etc) WAYYYYYYY too much trouble. At 12mm, they are also much too small to bother with.

More useful, though still fiddly, would be greeblies you could glue to an existing base, like little vents and cables. Still a lot of work though.
