I'm painting some 18th century townies at the moment, and I want to make their bases look quite urban. Unfortunately, they are all on relatively thick bases rather than slottas, so simply carving milliput looks out of the question – especially when the women have no base and simply rely on their dresses for gluing.

Does anyone have recommendations on making bases that are only partially cobbled?

I cut off of much of the original base as I can before attaching the figure to a metal washer. I then put on a very thin layer of green stuff to cover the washer and remaing base and sculpt the cobblestones into that.

Or you can use split lentils, they make great cobbles.
