Continuing my personal wargames history, this post covers my original wargames group, starting in high school, especially focusing on the several great campaigns we played out, both Napoleonic and… gasp, this new stuff called Dungeons and Dragons!

The original, from 1973 – inspiring but all but unplayable as originally written – not that we let that hold us back!

Hope some of you find my ramblings of interest…

Peter,
You're reminding me of my teen years. Like going to my first GenCon in Lake Geneva, or my first Napoleonics figures which were Kriegspielers. Those were some fun days in the hobby.

John,

I think the processes by which we all entered the hobby and developed that interest over the ensuing years is fascinating; I always enjoy reading the accounts of others in that regard. There will always be areas of similarity, as well as differences. We had a fair amount of Der Kriegspielers in our original armies as well, notably my first Bavarians.

Seeing an old D and D book reminds me of the review by Arnold Hendrick in The Courier

Yep, I recall reading it when it came out. He was both right (the game was essentially unplayable as initially published, without a lot of additional elaboration), and utterly wrong as to its future.
