Is it worth a little extra money to get the boxed set with counters and reference sheet for JR II or just go with the rulebook?

Seems a lot of people still prefer JR II over III so I was thinking about getting a copy.

You need to get counters from somewhere. The reference sheets are useful.

PM me if you're interested in a lightly-used JRII set, not very expensive.

I'd vote for the box set, it includes the counters, several sets of charts, the Beginner's Rules and the scenario book.

I am definitely in the, "still prefer JR2" camp. If you weren't ~2,500 miles away I'd invite ya by for a game sometime.

Another recommendation if I may would be to look up the Potomac Publications available on Wargamer's Vault – excellent scenarios.

You want the box set. I didn't know you could buy just the rules. I guess on ebay you could but you need the stuff that comes in the box. Put me in the JR2 camp too. Played it since it came out but now looking for something a little less intense, that plays quicker and with standard size bases.

Thanks for the input.

I own JR III, never had a chance to play. Three jobs and two small kids don't go well together with wargaming.

I was wondering what the rules were like b/c I read so much about JRII fans liking it better than JR III.

Still interested to get Guns at Gettysburg which I take it is a faster playing set of rules but captures the feel of ACW really well.

Regimental Fire and Fury as well.

Need opponents… anyone in CT?

I think that all of my local JR2 gamers eventually switched over to JR3. They were a bit hesitant at first though. It apparently took some getting used to.

There are a couple of clubs in CT not sure if they play JRII though. If you have both sides you could always introduce the rules.

And there is the Hartford Area Historical Gaming Society

Not sure if either of those is close to you. I don't have time to game on a regular basis just now (third kid is due February to give me three of them under 4) but maybe in teh future.

Where can you get the counters for the JR games besides with the box sets?

Bandit10 Dec 2012 2:40 p.m. PST

Easiest way might be to either make them or to ping someone who has a set and ask for a scan, then make your own by printing such and affixing it to some card stock. I never punched mine, copied a set and glued em to card stock, cut them all down.

The template for the JR counters is on the JRIII Yahoo Group site. Simply print them on cardstock using a high quality printer (color laser works great; ink jet is also OK).
