A friend & I have been discussing this & I thought I'd throw it over to a wider audience.

How could you give a role to a (union) signal tower in game?
Sure it'd make good 'eye candy' but a more meaningful function?

BTW is there anyone who makes one (&, more importantly, some suitable figures) in 20mm?

Off the top of my head:
-Make it a victory location
-Automatically "Sight" enemy troops within LOS if you play with blinds
-Allow a re-roll of a failed "command" or "orders" roll
-Make long-range artillery more effective

-And of course, you have to have some way for the rebs to knock it down with their own artillery, because that would just be cool!

Hope that sparks some inspiration.

Did a game called Last flight of the Aero Corps
The South had dropped its Balloon corps and the Union was about to in '63.
So I had a signal tower, a balloon that was spotting for heavy seige arty and a small garrison ,near the front.
The rebs had to capture the balloon and move it off. Spike the guns and burn the tower. Each had various victory points. They had cav,and 4 sqads. They burned/drove off the yanks at the tower and captured the balloon. Never got to the arty which they didn't know could not fire at close targets! A real p****r of a game.
all done using Brother Vs. Brother in 25mm

Redoubt Enterprises has one they sell …

The figures in the picture of the signal tower aren't included, but they can be purchased separately, and are located on the same page.

I saw a 15mm painted one with signalment being offered by GAJO Minatures. It looked pretty good. Go to WWW.gajominis.com & check it out.

Regarding scale … just realized the original post was asking about 20mm. My apology, because the one available through Redoubt Enterprises is 28mm.

I scratch built one to scale in 15mm that was based on the one I saw an image of in the Pennisular campaign. It was 10 stories tall. Mine is about 150mm tall. I plan to use it in a Fredricksburg type game to and modifiers to artillery long range fire.

Signal towers generally speaking weren't used in conjunction with front line fighting. They were mostly used for operational intelligence gathering and communication via various commands.

That said you could certainly use one. I have 5 signal towers in my collection but they are all 15mm. I have two for sale that are 28mm but that is because I don't game in that scale. Signal towers are great pieces to have but really would not have fallen into place in a full pitched battle.

Hey what about ballons? I have one Larry Reber built for me a few years back.

Old Glory did one in 15mm. The painted one sold by GAJO is an Old Glory 15mm one.

An observation balloon is VERY tempting.

Airfix used to make a signal tower in 20mm. Don't know if its made now. Hasegawa had a hard plastic kit with a tower for WWII in 20 mm.
