Looking for 15mm figures that would pass for Black Flag bandits that fought against the French at Tonkin during the 1870s-80s. I'd like to use my French Marines from Old Glory and Frontier Boxer rebellion line, but not sure if Old Glory Chinese imperials would work as these are all armed with modern rifles. These fellows were mostly armed with pole arms and blades.

From illustrations I've seen (and who knows how accurate those were), Black flag dress is somewhat like that of Chinese Bannermen. I've seen Falcon's Taiping Rebellion line, but did not like the great variation in figure size.

Also I'd be thankful for any painting guide sources.

I used the OG Boxers for my Black Flag units. Plenty of pole arms and swords.

Cheers,

In my research the Black Flags were mostly armed with rifled muskets, some breach loaders, and some early repeaters like Winchesters. I would definitely have most of them armed with some sort of firing weapon.

For example, the assault on Son Tay was vicious and the Black Flags were armed to the teeth.

Good luck with your project.

A good Book on it is McAleavy's 'Black Flags in Vietnam'.
The illustration of the battle of Langsonshows the Chinese troops with long spears and firearmsdefending a cannon.
Pages 49 and 80 show illustrations of Black Flags in groups. Long spears is the most common weapon shown.

That all. I'll look into the book, Rudy.
