Can anyone suggest some rules or resources for solo gaming the ECW? Thanks.

Ed the Two Hour Wargames guy30 Nov 2012 9:27 p.m. PST

All THW games are made for solo and same side gaiming as well as head to head.
THW will have a free Rally Round the King ECW supplement coming out in the next couple of months.
Here's a link to RRtK and a review.

RRtK is a unit based big battle game and does not use the mechanics found in the free skirmish rules, Chain Reaction 3.0 – Final Version.

I would be remiss if I didn't suggest Warmaster ECW.

The warmaster rules are available for free on the GW site here

And the mods I've made for ECW gaming here:

I've tried Forlorn Hope solo by introducing card activated movement by brigade. It's OK, perhaps a bit mechanical but that's more the rules than card activation which does much to make the game more tense and interesting.

I have never had any problems using the popular rules for any period in solo play.

laager5001 Dec 2012 12:55 p.m. PST

Piquet works well solo. You would need the main rule book and the supplement.Anchor of Faith.

Thanks all. Ed, I have RRtK. I am a compulsive buyer of THW rules, but didn't see the ECW parts. Look forward to the supplement. Laager, I'm also a compulsive buyer of Piquet rules and that's the only supplement I don't have. I suppose I should piquet up. I'll look at those two and see if they don't work before going into a GW store!

Pictors Studio02 Dec 2012 11:19 p.m. PST

What GW store would you find any ECW rules in?

The Tin Dictator03 Dec 2012 7:23 a.m. PST

What GW store would you find any ECW rules in?

Well, there was "Warhammer ECW".
So its possible I suppose.

Pictor's Studio,
I'm probably being dense – I know, I know – but when I follow the GW site link I don't see any free Warmaster rules – I see updates and armies but the only rules I can see are £35.00 GBP Has it changed? – is it only in the US? If I am just being dense can you direct a poor simple soul? Please?

Oberst Radl03 Dec 2012 7:23 p.m. PST

It's in there, I found it. Except those aren't the rules, they're rules clarifications -- the rule book costs the money.

arthur181504 Dec 2012 4:31 a.m. PST

Gwydion – and anyone else,
Go to link and read Rick Priestley's articles on the varous aspects of Warmaster. Coupled with Pictor's modifications, you may then have a reasonable idea how the system works – since you're interested in ECW not fantasy, much of the full rulebook is irrelevant!
For an alternative approach, check Bob Cordery's Portable Wargame website link
and Steven Paige's ECW variant thereof

Thanks Arthur.
Much appreciated.

Sorry to come to this thread late, but Clarence Harrison's free "Victory Without Quarter" rules work very well for solo play.

quindia.com/studioart12.htm

I have been semi-solo playing a 16th century mini-campaign (we are now in the midst of our third battle) using VWQ. I say "semi-solo" because I have two other gamers emailing me their orders for the two sides, then I play the game out until I need more input from them (although I could do this myself just as well), when I post photos of the situation on the blog link below and get their updated intentions.

alpianwars.blogspot.ca

Because VWQ is card driven I never know what is going to happen next . . . which makes it lots of fun for me too.

Any news on the Two Hour Wargames version?

Oberst Radl05 Apr 2013 6:54 p.m. PST

Supposedly it's coming (a member-written supplement on the THW Yahoo board).

Ed the Two Hour Wargames guy07 Apr 2013 7:48 p.m. PST

Oberst Radl has the latest info.

Grandviewroad17 Aug 2013 5:18 a.m. PST

any playtesters needed? for it?

JosefK20 Nov 2014 11:49 a.m. PST

Does anyone know what eventually became of the THW ECW mod. There is no mention on the Yahoo group or THW forum.

Cheers

I like Carnage and Glory for ECW. There are the advantages of computer rules (see this month's Miniature Wargames for a discussion of these) plus there is something about computer rules and soloing that makes it easier to see a game through in my opinion

Carlista24 Nov 2014 3:31 p.m. PST

Second idler for carnage and glory.
Works well for me on solo scenarios and helps offset my rebel bias …….
