There is a Rowton Heath scenario in MW1 which I was thinking of having a go it. Has anyone had a go at re-fighting this battle – both head-to-head and solo – and have any comment? I was thinking particularly in how to incorporate the Parliamentarian infantry attack accurately, but to still give the Royalist side a chance.

Don't think I ever played it but remember that the fighting was in two or three different phases/locations. Perhaps you could make a mini-campaign of it where each part affects the lineup in the next one, or even a map campaign set in a fairly small area?

Suppose that one of the probelms is that the Royalist cavalry are very experienced but also rather discouraged by a run of defeats. Perhaps have them fight as Veterans but test morale as Raw?

A bit of threadomancy here but I am still struggling to get this one to work. As Timbo alluded to, the action falls into quite discrete parts. However, each part in itself seems totally one-sided! link

Has anyone had a go at this one in the last four years?

I still have not Whirlwind!

Maybe some staggered or random arrival setup tweaking the historical course of action somewhat?

Looks interesting… as Timbo suggests, it really is a 2 or 3 phase battle; the outcome of the skirmish at Hattons Heath affecting the outcome of the main battle at Rowton with an after-affect on Gerard's failed sortie from Chester. All with pretty small numbers as well which makes it attractive as a wargame.

The random arrival is interesting too; 'what if' the King sends Langdale reinforcements in timely fashion and he is able to defeat Poyntz or the Parlimentarians respond slowly to Poyntz's request. You could end up with Gerard's force entering the battle at Rowton before Jones and Booth arrive to reinforce Poyntz.
