Over the course of time, it seems that there were two Napoleonic generals who left a lasting geo-political legacy, and who's ideas and governance impact us today. Napoleon, and Bernadotte. Oh sweet irony. |

I would hesitate calling Bernadotte a turncoat also. Napoleon fired him after Wagram so Bernadotte eventually finds another gig with the Swedes. Accusing him of treachery against France would accuse all of us for switching occupations in order to better ourselves. Let's all remember, that Napoleon was not the cuddliest person to work for, or with. |

Although turncoat might not be legally exactt or fair,I think we can understand the sentiment of the French soldiers; he had fought with them and now was fighting against them. It sort of undermines part of the military ethos, doesn't it? Regards |

Considering how many other people they fought with and then against I'd say no

Trefcon writes quite well in his memoires about the behaviour of Bernadotte, when Trefcon was prisoner of war and Bernadotte was seeing them Bernadottes /then crown prince of Sweden adresses a ?swedish? Marshal : Monsieur de maréchal, je vous présente mes anciens compagnons d'armes." Nous le quittames, très contents de lui. Trefcon, p. 168 |
