I'm gonna have to call shenanigans on the back story.

I was aboard the USS Ranger (CV-61) from 1986-1988, and I have an 8x10 of this occurance, which pre-dates the attribuition.

The deployment history shows the Ranger was not in the Persian Gulf in early 1990, it was in port, having just finished a deployment in Aug 1989. The Ranger did not head back out to the Indian Ocean/Gulf until Oct 1990.

Taking nothing away from the fact that it is a VERY cool pic, though. It's why I snagged it before I left the ship (with permission from buddies at the ships photo lab.)

I was thinking maybe the one I had was a different fly-by some other earlier year, but after checking the deployment history, it still does not jibe up with the back story – so at least THAT part is wrong. I'll dig out my 8x10 when I get home, scan and link it.

Aaaargh. It's up in the rafters all the way in the back. May take a day or two to find the motivation and effort to dig it out

We had one do a flyover at the opening of a Jaguars game once – it was a very impressive sight indeed.

They are impressive to see, especially when doing dummy attack runs on the nearby city.

Haven't seen that occur in quite some time, but it did make a lasting impression.

I suspect most who may have seen it, were probably oblivious to the meaning, which is most likely a good thing.
