How big was a 1864 Danish Battalion? Was a Danish infantry regiment two battalions? And a Danish infantry brigade 4 battalions? And a Danish infantry division 8 battalions strong? And how many and what type of caliber of field pieces did the Danes use in 1864? I have some reasons for asking. I am interested in eventually filling out my collection of 28mm 1870 French, Prussians, and Bavarians with some 28mm 1859/66 Austrians and 1866 Saxons. I'd also like to have an 28mm infantry division of 1864 Danes to game the 1864 War between Prussian, Austria, and Denmark. But I've lost my old copies of Clash of Empires that had the organization for 1864 Danes. As an aside, is Eureka Miniatures the only one that makes 28mm 1864 Danes? I've seen their infantry figures. But there's no artillery or cavalry. I guess you could use 28mm ACW Union figures to fill in those missing pieces. Now, I'm scratching my head and telling myself I should have done this with Frei Corps 15s! Blake |

From my article on the war for TPP DANISH ARMY Notes. Danish field batteries were standardized with 6 x 6 pdr and 2 x 13pdr Howitzers. Their larger defensive guns were muzzle- loaders which slowed their rate of fire compared to that of the Germans and exposed their gunners to rifle fire while reloading. Danish regiments consisted of two battalions each. A battalion's field strength averaged 864 men in 4 companies. Dragoon squadrons averaged 145 men and were often deployed as independent units. There were 4 squadrons per Dragoon Regiment. Each engineer company averaged 115 men. |

Rudy, The field artillery was also equipped with muzzle loaders, the M. 1863 being the most recent model. Mike |
