The Iranians nationalized the oil industry in 1951 and in response the British contemplated invading in order to seize the massive refinery complex at Abadan and the Iranian oilfields. Resources were stretched too thin with the Malayan Emergency and the Korean War so the response was pretty much an economic embargo.

It seems like it could be the basis for a 1950s "What if?" campaign. Assume Churchill is the Prime Minister instead of Atlee and that the British respond with force. You could have a British player, various Iranian factions and a Soviet invasion from the North in response to "unrest".

Here's a PDF with a much more thorough description: PDF link

Interesting idea. Are you thinking about gaming this?

Not currently, I just read about the plan for the first time yesterday. It would be a good excuse to paint some IS-3s though.

Agreed. It sounds like an interesting scenario. The British miniatures should be easy enough to get, but what about the Iranians? What equipment and uniforms would they have? I'm thinking some odd ball collection of US and British with maybe some French or something.

Well Iran bought 50 Czech AH-IVs in 1935 (Romanian R-1), as well as some TNHs (think Pz38). They formed the 1st and 2nd Divisions of the Imperial Iranian Ground Forces and served until 1957, 25 of each type per Division.

PZ38t vs centurions (or comets) is going to be a bit one sided :)
