Hi all,

I have some based 6mm figures – on bases with only flock covering them. I want to improve the look of these but without removing the figures from the base.

Any suggestions please? I was think of painting over the flock in small areas on the base – mud coloured paint…I am not sure whether this will work or indeed look very good. I will practice on a single base, but before I started I thought I might look for some inspiration here first.

Thanks,

Kevin.

Tufts?
Small rocks?
Tiny hedges?

Got any pics?

Different colored flock, in addition to Angel Barracks' excellent suggestions.

Hi, no pics I am afraid – I am at work…but good ideas (obvious really, so I just had a d'oh moment!). Thanks for the help

Id take some flock mix it with PVA and a little water to make a thick paste. Put that around the figures ( damp brush will remove any from the figs)on the bases, wait till dry ( desk light will speed that process) then you have a more 3 d looking texture. Just dry brush highlight with acylics and there you are. Takes me about 3 mins per base.
You can see what end result looks like

if you add a few tufts always helps to make the bases come to life.

Thanks Leon – and it is a very large army of your figures too.

I layer different colors of turf and other grasses, etc. I use school glue and then top off with either thinned school glue or matte clear acrylic paint.

At this scale, bold color differences are best. Have a look at Baccus' website for ideas too.

To disguise the 'hump' of the figures' base use sand. Go to B&Q and get a bag of builders sand, the fine stuff for 6mm. Costs about £1.50 GBP and will last a lifetime! Decant a bit into a tub of some sort and dry it out before use.

Lather the base with PVA. Coat the base with sand and give it a little shake. Allow to dry. Then paint with cheap, earth coloured craft paint. Drybrush two or three colours to taste. Pale brown, sand, grey, off-white are good choices. Then use PVA to flock the base leaving a few areas of 'bare earth'.

Job's a good'un!

Hi,
I dont mind clipping the Adler infantry off the sprue to base them closer together- but I was wondering if anyone might suggest a really viscous adhesive that might fill/minimise the gaps between individual figure bases as well as be kind of a 'press in place' fast method of mounting. It wouldn't have to dry fast, just be thick and sticky enough to hold the figures in position without support and/or having to file the bases flat. I was thinking some kind of adhesive caulk perhaps? Anyone tried this?

To deal with the flock already laid in a unified way, I would make a paste from PVA glue, a bit of filler, some sand or fine flock and a bit of paint (say yellowy green) to ensure that your final paste mix has no whites in it.

Apply and t hen dry brush with a yellow and then add whatever else you think it needs.
