Just read Gerald Seymour's 1984 novel In Honour Bound which has provided me with a decent scenario to game.

A Captain in the SAS is sent to destroy a new Soviet Mi-24 helicopter and retrive the hardware for evaluation purposes. He uses a FIM-43 Redeye (or a Stinger, Eureka Miniatures produce a 28mm Afghan Stinger-firing figure)on the unsuspecting Soviets.

Scenario being high sided mountainous valley of three sides, Afghan or British (or American) hidden counter representing missile firer and Afghan guerrilla 'bait'.

sounds good, but killing the chopper is only part of it. Getting the wreckage, and getting it out evading soviet hunter-killer teams is another neat trick worthy of gaming

Yeah I would make this game about SAS and Afghans/Soviets getting to the wreckage and recovering the item. Could even be a 3 way game.

Yes guys, spot on.

The book, which despite a slow situation building start, is an enjoyable read, certainly considering that it dates from the early-1980s.

Part of the novel involves setting ambushes for the Soviet helicopters and there is an Afghan arms and ammunition convey needing to cross the valley.
