Should I consider Imperial Chinese infantry as "native" or "European trained" for the purposes of basing in 800 fighting Englishmen or TSATF rules? These are 15mm Old Glory figs from the Boxer range which I mount on rectangle bases for European and on round washers for natives. The chinese have two types Imperial and Regular. The latter were trained by German officers and I'm certain that they should be counted as European, but as far as the Imperials go are they more like Boxers or trained troops?

I would mount them as "European Trained" and Boxersas "native".

Agree with 11th. Bandits would also be native based. Remember the Imperials were trained by an American (Ward?) and later led by Gordon, himself. Pre-1900 a bit but a fair game compromise.

No, the imperials were not trained for the most part by Europeans, certainly not Ward who never had more than 3,500 in the Ever Victorious Army. The largest bodies of Imperials grew out of the Bannermen and Green Flag units that fought in formations, but seamed to have the leadership and discipline of native units. The late 1890 saw the creation of some regular units along the Europeans models such as the Self strengthening Army (about 2500), the Pacification Army (7,000) and the Tenacious Army (10,000). These were Trained by Germans and had some European Officers, but organzed by Manchu generals.

I guess I'm leaning to basing imperials and regulars both on rectangles, but giving the former lower stats. Boxers and Braves on rounds.
