Here are my thoughts on the new venue:

The Good: The interior is large, airy, and with good lighting. Importantly, the temperature remained constant and comfortable all day. A definite step up from the old one.

The Bad: The concrete flooring was very hard on the poor old feet. The parking is abysmal compared to the old venue. The organisation at the bar was very bad. It made no sense from a logistical point of view and merely created a horrendous queue. It also made actually having your drink with your food almost impossible. You either had a cold drink and cold food, or a warm beer and warm food. Mental.

The really good: Discovering the work of sculptor Kristiaan Van Dyck, a Belgian sculptor making what has to be the best 1/144 (12mm) figures I have ever seen. His Imperial Romans defy belief in terms of the level of detail he has achieved. Simply stunning and I wish him all the best (and I will be buying an army of them for sure).

As usual, and this was my 14th or 15th show, a big well done overall to the TSoA crew. Thanks, it is appreciated (but please sort out the bar for next year).

Thanks for your thoughts Princeps.

The old venue came with a catering service. This year we had to organize it ourselves, so this was going to be a bit of a test case. We will work hard over the coming year to improve the bar and reduce queuing as much as possible.

The parking lot was stolen from us by the city of Antwerp who decided to organize a snowboarding world championship right on the parking lot and they have right of way in all matters. We ourselves were notified ONE SINGLE DAY before Crisis. Since this is a one-off event, it should not be a problem next year.

As for the floor, adding a carpet or flooring would be prohibitively expensive and far beyond our limited means. I believe the Warlords have received the same complaint about Salute and are in the same position as we are.

Princeps makes some good points, and I'd share his experience. This is really my favourite showof the year, and it doesn't disappoint. That said, it had to be good inside to overcome the enormously negative feelings that were drowning me after desperately trying to find somewhere to park! The catering is always a problem, even, I found, in the old venue. It would help to have some big signs explaining to people how it is going to work. The old Soviet system, buying a voucher in one place, to go and buy refreshments in another, was hardly user friendly. I am not sure I ever worked out what system was used this time! The increase in size of venue, number of traders and games, made it great for the customer – not sure how the traders found it. My suspicion is that there was probably not a sufficient increase in attendance to allow traders to keep their profit margins, but I am sure they will chip in with their own views. But, I really loved it, had a great game of Dux Britanniarum, and was completely blown away by the quality of those Kritiaan van Dyck sculpts. I would not have believed it was possible to produce that level of detail at my favourite scale. Wow!

PS. Many, many, thanks to TSoA!

Is there a web site or anywhere on-line we can see these Kritiaan van Dyck figures? They sound fabulous.

Patrick R04 Nov 2012 1:45 p.m. PST

Timmo,

link

This is their website, but they haven't posted any pics.

I have seen their work and they are sticklers for detail.

To all the guys at TSA, thanks for the another great show in a great city!
We at Figures In Comfort had a fantastic show and weekend. We were apprehensive looking at the size of the new venue on the Friday night, but the show seemed busy with a good buzz all day.
The downside for us directly were the food queue was so long that we didnt get anything to eat until 4pm (this seems to be addressed for next year) and one of the heating vents was right above our stand and was very noisy while he heating was on. (Something that cannot be avoided if we want to be near a door for loading!)

Looking forward to next year guys!
