I watched this the other night – illuminating on several levels – how it affected fighting methods, the availability of steel, etc … Definitely worth a look-see …

I seem to recall reading somewhere that most "Viking" swords were actually of Frankish Manuafacture and there fore no different to most of their opponents …

The Toledo blades were highly sought after. I suspect a lot of exageration in the narration of those shows. I use the one they did on the Trebuchet for Physics class. They make lots of absurd claims like the trebuchet is the wonder weapon – a secret weapon that by itself would win wars

All of these shows tend to be guilty of projecting a techno-tactical vision of warfare back onto all past conflicts.

OK, that's really strange, because I can clearly recall watching something (and I could swear it was an episode of Nova) on this subject YEARS ago, and this is supposedly new. It talked all about the twisting of the square rods etc. It was very cool, but it was a LONG time ago.

Yep. It was a NOVA episode. Still on my TIVO now. Pretty interesting. Basically it said the Vikings were getting their steel from the Middle East and the swords were being made by a specific monastery.

"They were very advanced." This is a stock phrase used for everything from Eskimos to Old Zimbabwe. Every ancient civilisation is advanced in relation to what ? They all are advanced, even the most primitive are highly advanced …

Agree absolutely Patrick, the TV producers are prone to confuse culture with civilisation. That's not to say that Zimbabwe or the Vikings or the Aztecs are not interesting, they are just not to be compared with Rome or China or the Islamic near East.

Yep. It was a NOVA episode.

I mean a NOVA episode from way back when. I know it had to be PBS of some sort, because it was certainly before I had cable. It might, I suppose, have been part of a larger show on Vikings.
