Hi, I've got a preliminary rule system for the Russo-Turkish War using The Sword and The Flame. I looked information on the conflict online and got a general overview of the war.

My questions are two fold. What should Russian and Turkish troops be rated as? Are Russian troops as good as British line infantry? Do the Turks equate to Egyptians?

I've read different opinions. Some gamers rate the Russian as British line infanty when it comes to their opponents in Central Asia. I figured the Turks would be as good as the Egyptian army as far as organization, equipment, and morale.

Am I wrong? Would Russian troops rate as Egyptian infantry as far as fighting stats go?

I assume Russian troops would be better than basic Turkish line infantry or their reserve garrison troops. If I treated the Russians as Egyptians for game purposes, I'd have to lower the Turkish stats. Just looking at some Wiki articles, it looks like the Turks actually put up some fight when their entrenchments were attacked by the Russians. But the Turk surrendered the stragetic initiative when it came to attacking.

For the sake of playability, I like keeping the Russians with British stats and leaving the Turks as Egyptians for a Russo-Turkish war game.

Thanks,
Blake

The Russians were fans of the bayonet and not marksmanship. The 1st rate Turks would possibly be better shots and slightly worse in melee than the Russians. The rest of the Turks would be about the same shots as the Russians and worse in melee.

Thanks,

John

Now that is a good question. In terms of defending the Russians were every bit as good as the Brits, and the Turkish regulars were very close – but in terms of attacking, I would rate both lower, probably giving the edge to the Russians

So – I would rate the Russians and Turkish regulars as equal in defense but give the Russians the edge in attack, while that Turkish reserve units would be probably lower in both

One has to make allowances for Turkish Irregulars and Bashi Bazouks. Let us not forget also Bulgarian stats will be needed as well as Serbian and Montenegrin
