Finding accurate Flags for the TYW is a bit like herding cats though. Some of the flags produced by the above are just wrong. Either wrongly ascribed or the wrong way around. This is because they either copy from each other or all refer back to the same wrong 'original' source. This is not a big criticism as they can only work with what they have got. A bigger criticism is that some of them are, literally, made up. This is a shame. What side are you after? |

Hi chaps, thanks for the links, very useful. "Wyeayman" I can live with things being wrong if everybody is wrong, this way nobody can accuse me of being wrong. Its only when I am wrong and everybody else is right that I hate it (If you understand this I can let you have the name of my shrink) As for for sides, I will probably go for Imperialists (I will lend these to my regular opponent as he his evil and so are they) And I will probably be the Dutch with quiet a few Scots mercs (This will please my wife as she is one, a Scot not a merc that is.) By the way which part of God's county are you from. Thanks again to all you lovly folks, best regards

The Scot mercenaries were unlikely to have had the St Andrews cross on their flags. There is an alleged Pappenheim flag doing the rounds which has an 'eagle displayed' sideways on with its head to the pole. Heraldically this is simply not on, and would be a gross insult to the Emperor! The Dutch do have a few preserved flags, but the only reference I can find in the library of the Kgl Armeemuseum about flags of the period (well – the Eighty Years War)suggests that they may have been variations on bars of blue white and red. I am from sunny Bradford. I see that you are also living the dream! |

Wyeayeman, since you know that the flags are wrong you obviously have all the correct information so could you please pass it onto the flag manufacturers so that they can produce the correct flags? |

How odd, a TMP discussion about flags devolving into a bit of Hale and Paice! |

There are a few supposed English or Scots mercenaries/allies flags in the Dutch section of Gush's Renaissance website. A possible flag for Sir William Edmond's Scottish cavalry regiment can be found at link |

In 1635 eyewitness describe standards of Scottish regiment in Swedish service (in Prussia, during negotiations with Poles) as 'whole red with small white St. Andrew cross on blue background'. So I guess wyeayeman need to do his homework again ;) |

In the famous Gortter Manuscript, the company of Capt. Newton had a colour with a white St-Andrew's Cross on it. Prints showing the Scottish companies that served in the States Army almost invariably show a dark colour with a St Andrew's cross on it. The St-Andrew's cross was used both by the Spamish and the pro and anti Spanish troops in the Low Countries. |
