Just a basic question
what is the basing system like with these rules? Curious how they handle it, since there really is no standard for the period(?) |

As a regimental level ruleset, I believe it was 8(15mm) figures per stand, 4 stands per "unit". |

Keep in mind that it is meant to work with other basing schemes too. If you have something based for Shako/Napoleon's Battles, Empire or Lasalle, you should be fine. The only caveat is you will have to have enough stands. I am sure IDYM is mentioning the rules ideal. I can tell you that the rules were written with basing schemes being very flexible as the authors have known that there are no standard basing schemes in Napoleonics as there are with ancients. My understanding is that each unit essentially occupies a space. I am curious on how they do bayonet charges, etc. as well. |

The standard in the rules is a 40mm x 30mm base – 8 infantry (4x2 although I use 6 and it still looks good), 3 cavalry or 1 gun + crew. Heavy artillery and commanders are 40mm square. Additionally you'll need 40mm x 80mm for limbers and a 60mm square LOC marker. Units are either 4 or 6 bases for infantry and cavalry, 2 or 3 for artillery. The rules work with other basing as long as the unit widths are roughly the same. I played a game with my opponent having a 90mm frontage compared to my 80mm. There was no affect on gameplay at all. Depth generally doesn't make a difference as all measurement is in Movement Units. |

As recommended by the rules; Close order infantry is 4 minis to a stand, 6 stands to an infantry unit. Skirmishers are mounted 2 to a stand a close order infantry unit typically has 2 skirmisher stands. Cavalry is mounted 3 minis to a stand with 4 stands to a unit. Artillery is one gun with 3-4 crew, and a unit uses one stand for every two actual guns. As pointed out you can use your current basing as long as everything is consistent. |

I think Heisler is describing the mounting conventions for Napoleon at War; FoG(N) uses four stands per unit. However, you can swap out unit stands for the 'attachments' like BN guns, extra skirmishers, etc; the replacement stand represents these modifications to the basic infantry regiment's structure. In other words, the battalion is still at full strength, but now has extra abilities added beyond pure line infantry. You should also have a half dozen or more adjutant figures or ADCs mounted individually to represent the command points you can assign to a unit for accomplishing complex moves. |

One thing you do have to take to heart is the frontage of Artillery units. Note the word, unit, they are not Batteries. Its pretty important that "Small" units equate to two infantry stands and "Large" units to three. Sounds a bit picky but if they are much larger than this the tactical deployment and firepower of artillery in the game is thrown off. Obviously the odd few millimetres don't matter but if, for whatever reason, you get up to the level where, say a four stand infantry unit and a "Small" artillery unit have the same frontage, it will screw things up. |
