Heck, if you think that a monoplane or triplne was the prettiest, be my guest!
By "prettiest", I mean whatever you want it to mean.
It could be the lines, the shape, the coloration, etc.

I admit my prejudices here, and don't think that a box with guns and weaons hanging on the wings is "pretty". YMMV.
(If this offends fans of the SE5.a, well, it was meant to.)

For my money, the Albatros DV had the best lines, and when those Germans started tarting them up, had the best markings.
So, I vote for the DV, in all its Teutonic Whimsy.
I painted up quite a few in 1/72, and enjoyed them all.

David Miniature Armies20 Oct 2012 7:36 a.m. PST

For the Germans i too go with the DV
Allies i like the SpadX111 i like its no nonsense look.

Huscarle20 Oct 2012 7:49 a.m. PST

Another vote for the Albatross DV.
For the allies I'll go with the Sopwith Pup.

I personally like the Taube. Not a gun on it, but a beautiful airplane.

I love the Eindecker as well for some reason, as well as the Gotha bomber.

Onomarchos20 Oct 2012 7:54 a.m. PST

I always liked the looks of the Nieuport 28.

Fat Wally20 Oct 2012 7:56 a.m. PST

I've always really liked the Pfalz D.III

Pointed spinner, sleek elegant lines and an attractive tail.

Solzhenitsyn20 Oct 2012 7:59 a.m. PST

Alb DVa. Not the best fighter, but good. Just like the look.

Johny Boy20 Oct 2012 8:01 a.m. PST

Pfalz for me…….

Dva for me as well although I think the Nieuport 17 was a pretty plane as well.

DisasterWargamer Supporting Member of TMP20 Oct 2012 8:42 a.m. PST

For the Allies another vote for the Spad XIII

For the Germans the Fokker D series – in particular the VIII – loved the changes to the engine cowl.

I like the earlier, rickety looking ones, by the time you get to Alabtros DV and Sopwith Camel my interest wanes. However I do have a soft spot for the Fokker DVIII – odd, retro looks, cutting edge performance.

Sundance20 Oct 2012 8:49 a.m. PST

Albatroses for me. Pretty planes and good fliers.

Moonbeast20 Oct 2012 9:01 a.m. PST

Albatros DV and Sopwith Camel for me.

Son of Liberty20 Oct 2012 9:12 a.m. PST

For me, it's a toss-up between the Alb. D.III and Pfalz D.III.

jpattern220 Oct 2012 9:15 a.m. PST

DVa here, too.

Texas Jack20 Oct 2012 9:18 a.m. PST

Nieuport 17 all the way. For the Germans I prefer the Albatros D.III over the D.Va, I think its something in the tail, but not sure.

However Johny Boy had a couple of good ones as well, and macedonīs Roland C.II was like a good looking, pleasingly plump dame. grin

Yea, Albatross DIII or DV, or the Pfalz as well for me too.

Pfalz D.III and Nieuport 17.

Allies: Nieuport 28 – the flying death trap.

German: Pfalz

Jubilation T Cornpone23 Oct 2012 2:22 p.m. PST

Pfalz for me. Closely followed by the Bristol fighter.

BlackWidowPilot Fezian23 Oct 2012 9:47 p.m. PST

Since this is all about looks, for the Central Powers, I'll add my vote for the Albatross D.V. and D.Va:

For the Allies, my vote is for a "big bird" of a different feather, the Caudron R.11 "gunship." Fast as many single seat fighters and up to five Lewis guns; what's not to love about this streamlined beast?evil grin

Faster than a Breguet 14, armed to the teeth with gunners fore and aft plus a sting in the floorboards, a real beast indeed for riding herd on those bomber formations and putting the smackdown on any boche who tries to get too familiar with their charges.evil grin

Another vote for the Hanriot & Siemens Schuckert. I quite like the Roland DVI with the wood plank fuselage as well.

Abwehrschlacht24 Nov 2012 3:28 a.m. PST

Pfalz and Roland get a vote from me!

Kaptain Kobold03 Jan 2013 4:44 p.m. PST

I'm with David Manley – the DH2 gets my vote every time.

WillieB06 Jan 2013 4:15 a.m. PST

Oddly enough not a fighter at all for me. IMHO the Albatross C XII was the most beautiful biplane ever made. The C XV is nice too but the XII has the edge.

For the Entente probably the Martinsyde S1.

spontoon06 Jan 2013 5:07 p.m. PST

I'm telling you folks, pusher planes are prettier!

Of course now we'll have to have an ugliest plane thread,….

WarpSpeed08 Jan 2013 11:11 p.m. PST

Prettiest Alb DVa and Nieuport 11,second choices,Pfalz DIII and Sopwith pup.Ugliest by far,Maurice Farman long or short horn trainers.

CPO Pertwee20 Jan 2013 12:11 p.m. PST

Without a doubt it must be the Sopwith Pup.

jony66320 Jan 2013 6:53 p.m. PST

I go with the Pup as well.

Hussar12321 Jan 2013 7:21 a.m. PST

For me it is the Albatros D.V and the Caudron R.11 also.

Great War Ace18 Feb 2013 8:24 a.m. PST

Nieuport sesquiplane series, N. 17 being the prettiest of the lot….

jony66319 Feb 2013 9:55 a.m. PST

For me, it has to be the Pup.

SgtPrylo22 May 2013 1:09 p.m. PST

Seimens Schuckert and the Gotha. Though for sheer intimidation factor, the all-red Fokker Triplane!
