Anyone gaming small actions with 40's?

If so, any points to share?

I've been purchasing Sash and Saber 40's for the past several years and they will be on the painting table soon.

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Define small?

For skirmish, many like Sharpe's practice.

If you are talking Empire, you normally do corps or army level actions and I think you would need a shed load of figures and space for 40mm!

Lasalle might work well. Divisional level action with battalions as units. In 28mm, infantry is usually 3 to a stand if doing wide bases. This ratio might work well for 40mm figures.

I've seen a division level action with a scale of 1:25. It was pretty impressive but of course all the buildings etc had to be scratch built. I was tempted but it would have meant pretty much starting all over again.

I do agree that using Empire for 40mm figures and sub Corp level actions might be a bit of a stretch. Sharpe Practice is an excellent set of skirmish rules and 40mmm lends itself more to skirmish for the simple reason of scale. Unless you're going to use 1 x 40mm figure to represent a brigade then you'll need a ground scale that would be more suited for a double garage floor minimum. If you're coming from an Empire background I'm not sure you'll find Lasalle too appealing.

Empire is fine for that scale unless you are only using sub battalion formations.

I've played brigade battles before using Empire and 1:15 figure ratios.

Thanks to all for the responses! Currently, I play Empire with 25/28mm having gone thru the '15mm craze' in the late 70's (I started with the 1st Edition). The 40mm Sash & Saber are indeed for Skirmish Gaming. While cleaning them up I started wondering if they could be used for Brigade level Empire games.

have just got myself some 54mm French and Prussians and started to paint them up. have about 2500 25mm (half Hilton Hunt's from the 70S) but at 60 years old an been painting 25 mm for over 45 years my eyes are not so good at painting so small a figure now. so trying 54mm.
using Empire and a figure= 1x60 a three man company would take up 70mm front and 50mm back giving a 60 man front and three deep = 180 so a regiment would be around 1080 men.
using empire but more thinking of the base side = 60 men taking up a front of 70meters seems not to bad.
not based any figures yet as still painting, looking for 4-5 regiments of 15 to 20 54mm figures inf, and two sqd 4 man cav and one art gun pre base.
once I have the French sorted i'll start setting up the Prussians and then add some brits. may put the brits on a two man 70mm base to make them only two deep.
all still in the planning so any help any one can give would be very welcome.
