I recently purchased a 1/1800th model of the Java. I have seen a photo of her at dock in Australia prior to her sinking at the Battle of Java Sea. She is paihted in what appears to be a two or perhaps three tone paint scheme, However I can find no clearer photos. So i'm looking to my fellow TMPer's for help. Any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks and salut y'all!

Everything I've read and photos I've seen suggest the standard pre-war light gray colonial scheme. Apparently the ABDA fleet was pretty much on it's own. The admiral in charge of the US Asiatic squadron even complained that none of the pre-war camo tests considered his needs. If you've got a photo go with it. Many ad hoc schemes were med/dark gray over light gray with a fake bow wave in white.

I painted mine overall grey before finding this image. Whether this paint job was still on Java at the time of her sinking I can't say. I've seen models of De Ruyter painted in grey, green, and black. I don't know if Java had something similar just by looking at a black and white photo but the the scheme type (hard edged and angular) reminds me of De Ruyter's scheme.

Nice pic which I have never seen before. Definitely a a dark pattern over a lighter shade.

From "Dutch Warships of WWII" by Henk van Willigenburg,

The light color is an off greenish grey.
The book only gives this pattern as 'from 1941 on'.

Very cool. What publisher for the book?
