Went to Rock-Con and
didn't play any space games. Not even my own, as nobody signed up for either event.
Rock-Con fills up with a lot of gamers, and can generally be called a success. However, the participants seem to be highly segmented. There are the continuing events:
* Warhammer 40K, largely sponsored by a Milwaukee society.
* FOW, of course. But they have large tourneys.
* Dorkstock
* Some "dungeon crawl" groups.
* Interestingly, a convention with a very large contingent of boardgame players. A lot of pickup-games, mostly in the "Eurogame" style.
I estimate that this eats about one-half of the attendees. The remainders divide themselves among a variety of:
* Role-play games (cops & robbers, wild west and the (in)famous "B-Movie" event late Saturday.
* WW2 armor, or combined arms.
* Napoleonics.
The 5%-10% remaining are other things, such as air combat (Check Your 6 and Wings of War/Glory), Formula D and space-themed games. I saw 2-3 other space combat games this weekend, and the only one with action was the Star Trek game. I guess that people will play something that relates to a TV show they've seen.
I didn't realize this convention demographic until I had to this weekend, and it seems right along with what I've seen in previous years.
Rock-Con is good for all the things I've mentioned. But if I wish to run space games again, I think I'll find another venue.
