I am preparing to run the original E. G. Gygax module series, "Against the Giants", using the BattleSystem Skirmish rules. As part of my preparations, I needed some largish wolf figures, to serve as Winter Wolves, from the AD&D Monster Manual. Here is the link. The figures I acquired, were OOP Marx brand, Wolf figures, 54mm scale. I created an automatic search on e-Bay, to find the set I acquired. They were molded in white plastic -- perfect! See my link to learn how easy they are to convert. Cheers! |

I love the "Against the Giants" modules! Cool idea runing them with the old Battlesystem Skirmish rules. Please follow up with a few after action reports. |

Cool! You'll have to blog about the figures you use for the frost giants and post some pics of the terrain, as well as the game once you run it. |

Yeah, I remember that series well. I died many times in it. Thanks, John |

It surprises me how few gamers are willing to look across manufacturers and even across scales to get what they want. I wanted some big, evil wolves for a 15mm game, and bought the Bag o' Dogs. They painted up nice into very large wolves with a decidely evil cast. |

DesertScrb, All: I bought some Cherilea 60mm Viking figures to use as Frost Giants, along with some other knock-off, 54mm Viking figures, all plastic. The Cherilea are available from different sellers on e-Bay, and elsewhere. They have decent detail, and they have excellent poses. They paint easily, and quickly, but I would recommend using Gesso as a primer, first. The Cherilea figures pair up nicely with the Wolves. I plan on adding a page for them to my blog, in the near future. I also plan on blogging the terrain, and the game, of course. I have the Dragon Magazine Archive CD set from way back. I went through all of the issues, and that is where I found articles on using existing historical figure ranges to represent various races. The author used some 15mm figures as Elves, as at that time (late 1970's), there were few Elven figures available. I really like what he suggested, and it is working for me, and my games. Not everyone shares my view, but for me, I really like representing Elves as much shorter than Humans, with Goblins being only 4' tall, as well. It's all about fun, and that is what I have in spades. Cheers! |

Sgt., those plastic vikings would be ideal for use as 25mm frost giants. There are also some caveman figures on ebay that would make good hill giants for "Steading of the Hill Giant Chief." |

"I have the Dragon Magazine Archive CD set from way back. I went through all of the issues, and that is where I found articles on using existing historical figure ranges to represent various races." Could we get some citations, please? I'd love to read those articles, even if only for nostalgia. |

DesertScrb, right on! I bought a bucket, several years ago, of Cave Men figures, and Dinosaurs. I now have 32 "Hill Giant" figures, six of which are the old, 1982 Grenadier lead "Hill Giants" set. The plastic Cave Men are a perfect match for the old Grenadier figures. I have more than enough Hill Giants. By the way, the 54mm Cave Men figures work as 1st Ed. AD&D Hill Giants, but they're a bit too small for 2nd Ed. Hill Giants -- I use them both as Hill Giants, and Ogres. When I need both types of monster figures, I use Mage Knight Krug figures for my Ogres. Sculptor Seeker: Are you asking me to quote the articles, or list the issue number, and pages? I can look up the issue, and page numbers, but quoting the articles in full, would be a copyright violation. The issue which discusses the Works-In-Process technique, is issue 39, pages 6-7. Issue #28, pages 14-16, discusses different manufacturer's figures, and scales, as well as possible races to use them for. Issue 31, pages 20-21, details how to select different figures, of different scales, to represent various races, such as using 54mm Vikings as Frost Giants. This is the article which I drew the greatest inspiration from, for figure substitution. Cheers! |

Nice! I actually love the battlesystem 2nd ed and skirmishes rules but the other kids in my neighborhood would rather play 40k:( |

@Sgt Slag: We used MARX vikings as frost giants as well. Nice to be on the same page. |

cooey2ph: No, I used Cherilea brand: auction The Cherilea are 60mm tall, so slightly taller than the 'standard' 54mm figures. I have some 54mm Vikings, as well, so I have some variety in both poses, and sizes, but the Cherilea are much higher quality sculpting. With regards to the Cave Men bucket, I purchased them over five years ago -- they have since disappeared from online sources, as well as local sellers (I bought them at Wal-Mart, but since then, I have searched toy stores, and other Wal-Marts, but they seem to have been pulled off of the market
). The bucket came with plastic dinosaurs, as well as the Cave Men figures. I used the Triceratops figures, to make Ultra-Heavy Goblin Cavalry figures. I had the Prince August Wolf Rider Mold, which has two rider cavities. They worked really well when seated upon the Triceratops. Recently, I just tried using the Spear armed Goblins from Caesar's fantasy figures set ( auction ), 1/72, or 25mm, scale figures. I cut them off of their bases, and epoxied them onto the backs of some surplus PA Wolves I had sans riders. They look great, and they fit well on the Wolves -- same 25mm scale. I'll be posting photo's on my blog site in the next few days. Cheers! |
