Time for another bit of actual gangster history turned into hardboiled prose, from "Mad Dogs with Guns"

CHICAGO; NOVEMBER 1924

Maybe it was making all those wreaths for Mike Merlo's funeral. Maybe he just forgot he was a gangster first, and a florist second. Maybe he just didn't believe it could happen to him. Deanie had a lot of confidence in himself.

The big guy came in with two smaller men. The order had come in last night. Dion ‘Deanie' O'Bannion had the floral arrangement ready. It was nice work. "You come for Mike's flowers?" O'Bannion offered his hand. The big fellow reached out his own. Then it wasn't flower store business anymore. The guy gripped Deanie's hand tight, yanking him off balance, and as he did so, the others pulled their guns. Six bullets into the Irishman, the last to the head. He lay dead among his own cuttings.

The killers left the wreath behind them.

Well of course they left it behind. They were killers, not theives.

I would recommend watching 'Boardwalk Empire'.

Also recommended to keep all the players straight: "Bloodletters and Badmen" by Jay Robert Nash: I bought it as one of my textbooks in Freshman English Composition in college. Lots of good stuff therein.
