I have held off upgrading my old iPhone to the new OS due to the complaints about the maps. Somebody in the office brought in a iPhone 5 and I borrowed it to check it out.

I was pretty eager when I fired up the map app and saw the 3D wireframe. I went to Omaha beach and went into 3D view mode, and was pretty amazed at the view of the bluffs. I'd never gotten a view like that using Google Earth or anything else.

I obviously just skimmed the surface of it. Do regular users agree or disagree? Is there anything else out there that gives such a good 3D topo view of the world?

I really don't give two Bleeped texts about poor turn by turn nav, cars blending into the road or such crap for such a nice 3D view of historical battlefields.

Ditto, I couldn't get just the wireframe mode once it was up and running; that just flickered up before the real map was rendered.

Can you do regular 3D maps on the iPhone 4?

Its a feature of IOS6 but there are so many errors on it it is not reliable at the moment.

Look at this site to see the errors:

Never, ever be the first adopter of any operating system. Let the gee whiz kids buy it, work out the bugs and buy it down the road when the bugs are fixed. It used to be that with an Apple product, you didn't have to worry about such things. But even Apple is rushing items to market. They are losing market share to Android and are having to up the ante when possible. I am probably going the Galaxy SIII route as it has more bells and whistles.

And contrary to what you thing, turn by turn navigation is VERY valuable.

This being said, the 3D topo stuff sounds fascinating.
