I can't see everywhere at once but I have not seen much new activity in the area of new 40mm figures. So is this idea growing, stagnant or dying? |
| Sloppypainter | 26 Sep 2012 7:45 a.m. PST |
Trident minis is always adding to their AWI range and has started an ACW range all available through Miniature Service Center. |

I think 40mm figures have established themselves in some selected period, Napoleonics, ACW, F&I
it has made inroads into Colonials,ECW/TYW and ancient/medieval. I think there is a real upside potential for 40mm using the SAGA rules. Both Sash and Saber and Trident appear to be expanding their lines. db |
| Pizzagrenadier | 26 Sep 2012 8:38 a.m. PST |
Sash and Saber has a nice line of 40mm minis for a bunch of different periods. Mostly ACW and before though, so no modern stuff. I would love to see a well fleshed out and supported line of 40mm WWII. I think Irregular is the only ones to do WWII in this scale. I like the potential of 40mm for WWII and moderns (especially zombie and modern ops) because US O scale and 1/43rd scale die cast match well with 40mm minis. Plus you can still use pretty much all of your other standard 28mm terrain (trees, etc.). It is a great scale for very small scale actions (squad vs squad) which is easy on the wallet and fast to paint with more detail. I like the potential, and I hope more companies offer this scale for more modern periods. Keith |

HLBS used to have a nice selection of 40mm moderns. Does anyone know if they sold those molds off (like they did with their 40mm Old west)? |
| WarWizard | 26 Sep 2012 8:42 a.m. PST |
I think it is growing signifcantly now. S&S and Trident have excellent lines now with more coming all the time. S&S even does "Retreat from Moscow". I have not seen that done in any other wargammingscale that I can recall, except 54mm toy soldier style. |
| Martin Rapier | 26 Sep 2012 8:52 a.m. PST |
I think it will always be a niche scale compared to the 'big ones', but it seems to be well established and still growing. |
| skyking20 | 26 Sep 2012 9:13 a.m. PST |
evilC (by the way you have a great blog!!!) I bought a bunch of the HLBS Old West figures just after he stopped listing them but I did not get them all. Who did he sell the Old West molds to? |
| Pizzagrenadier | 26 Sep 2012 9:19 a.m. PST |
I thought someone bought the HLBSC moderns molds and I thought I saw them being carried by someone else, but I can't find them now. They were some pretty cool figs too! |
| skyking20 | 26 Sep 2012 9:31 a.m. PST |
HLBS still has his 40mm F&IW stuff. It looks good in the pictures. has anyone every painted any of it up? |

(Thanks for the compliment!) HLBS sold off their 40mm Old West figs/molds to Minifigs: link Knuckleduster also has a nice range of 40mm figures: link |

You can now get the old Foundry (Perry Brothers) 40mm ACW figures again. At least according to the announcement on the foundry website this past month or so. VR James Mattes |

I am new to the period. I really enjoy painting the 40mm AWI from Trident and the Miniature Service Center (Doug) is great to deal with..40mm is great for a 50ish guy with glasses. |
| Dave Crowell | 26 Sep 2012 3:42 p.m. PST |
40mm is definitely alive and well. Add Romanoff to the list of active manufacturers as well as Front Rank. There are at least two active 40mm yahoo groups, one for 40mm in genal and one focused on S&S. |

James, yes Neil at Foundry told me if you have access to an old list of Founry 40mm they can cast nearly everything on demand. The range will re-appear soon. Cheers Franck |

I would love to see a well fleshed out and supported line of 40mm WWII. I think Irregular is the only ones to do WWII in this scale. What about 1/48 scale Tamiya? link |

Buildings- Sand S do a few- a couple of cabins and a block house suitable for FIW/AWI- the cabin looks the part in ACW too plus some useful fences and walls. Don't forgert Drabant in 40mm still bringing out additions of a superb quality. Rumour has it they are doing some 28mm – watch this space |
| Pizzagrenadier | 27 Sep 2012 8:54 a.m. PST |
The Gonk: The Tamiya stuff is ok, but I don't like putting the plastic kits together, nor do they have all of the forces I am interested in or the poses I like. Plus the box set up is not ideal for putting together correct TO&Es. They are a little on the smaller side (pics of them posed next to Crusader and Artizan actually puts them more in the 28mm scale surprisingly). I would like to see something in metal made for gaming and set up in packs for squads and support weapons. |

If you are selective you can certainly use 28mm buildings with 40mm figures
particularly if your doing large unit games rather than skirmish. The MBA and Old Glory Shipyard buildings work just fine

Grand Mannor has a number of buildings and items in 40mm for the period. |
| Doug MSC | 27 Sep 2012 4:45 p.m. PST |
Miniature Building Authority also has many buildings made for large 28's but they could easily be used with the 40mm figures. |
| OldGlory Andy | 28 Sep 2012 2:02 a.m. PST |
Good point Doug I'd forgotten Grand Manner- I have found their resin a tad brittle in the past though- perhaps that why I'd forgotten them |

I think 40mm works great for AWI, play battles not skirmishing. I have about 300 figures and have played most major battles. They do not take much more room on the table than 28s do, BUT cost can be high. someday I will post pictures. |
| vojvoda | 03 Oct 2012 1:32 p.m. PST |
Sash and Saber figure cost is as cheap if not cheaper than most 25/28mm at the conventions. they often have a buy five packs get one free sale going on. VR James Mattes |

I am the sculptor for Trident, Gringos , Flashing Blade Greeks and some fantasy stuff all in 40mm. I feel the 40mm scale is a slow burner but is growing with time as people see the many advantages over other scales. Better anatomy in general , detail, more impact and can be gamed in battle and skirmish level. Regards Sean judd sculptor in 40mm and 28mm |
