Hey All, I'm looking for info on a black and yellow Hussar regt. during the Polish Uprising of 1794? Years ago I saw a manequin in those colours at the Raclawicka Panorama and thought it would be neat to paint up. Also, what figure range would be the closest representation of those hussars in 28mm?

Thanks!

Jan,

In 1783-1784, the Army hussar regiments were organized into light horse. From 1788, some new hussar units were created. So that in 1788-1796 the Russian hussards were ….
-- Life Hussar squadron with the Guard
-- Voronezhskiy Hussar regiment (5 squadrons) : blue pelisse (officers white) with lining red and black sheepskin trim, dolman blue, pants saddle-colthe red, cords laces buttons white
-- Olviopolskiy Hussar regiment (6 squadrons) : as per Voronezhskiy but with yellow trim
-- hussards the Pskovskiy Dragoon regiment (5 squadrons) : as per Olviopolskiy, except the dolman collar and cuffs were red
-- Moscovskiy Hussar detachment (2 squadrons), in Moscow to support the police : red pelisse with black sheepskin trim, dolman pants saddle-clothe black, cords laces buttons yellow (later changed at times at the choice of the Moscow Governor, but no yellow)
-- convoy Hussard squadron (1 squadron), with Prince Potemkin only 1789-1792 : red pelisse with black sheepskin trim, green dolman, red pants, laces cords buttons white
-- hussars of the Gatchina demonstation troops (under the authority of the tsarevich Paul) : pelisse light blue, white dolman with light blue collar and cuff, pants natural color leather

There were no other changes 1788-1796, the end of Catherine's reign.

The painting, called "Panorama racławicka" in Polish was 100 years after the events. Maybe the yellow and black hussars were a bit fanciful?

Thanks for the info and the links! I managed to find a clip on youtube showing the hussars I saw which are described as the "Achtyrka Hussars". Here's the clip and they're shown at 2:53.

Sorry, no such unit in 1794 – and no such uniform when they were formed 2+ years later.

29 November 1796 – The Mariupol, Pavlograd, Aleksandriya, Akhtyrka, Sumy, and Izyum Light Horse, and the Yelisavetgrad Horse Jäger are renamed as Hussars.

In the Akhtyrka Regiment:
For lower ranks – brown (korichnevyi) pelisse, brown dolman with straw-colored collar and cuffs; breeches of white clothe; brown bag on the headdress; cords and buttons yellow; yellow sash with white bindings and tassels; brown sabertache with toothed straw-colored trim and yellow monogram; brown saddle cloth with straw-colored trim and yellow monograms. For officers – gold appointments, gold cord and eagles on the saddle cloth.

Hmmm…interesting! I guess they didn't do their research.
Thanks again for your help.
