I use google translate all the time, so far I've been able to make sense of everything it translated. "Crackling Applause" took some getting used to though (Japanese to English) |

Andrew! This is the one I use most often. freetranslation.com You can get "human translation" for a few cents a word on the more obscure phrases, otherwise it's as free as the air. Until the Gummint taxes it. TVAG |

Google translate's pretty good, but it doesn't seem to work for Japanese. The nice thing about it is that you can "teach" it by contributing better translations. Even if you don't know the source language, there are plenty of places where we can fill in military/technical/hobby terms. Also, if you translate individual words or phrases on the translate screen, instead of translating a whole web page, it will show you a range of alternative translations when you mouse over a word. (Actually, you can do this with very large blocks of text; it will try to group some words into phrases, which will sometimes be completely the wrong thing to do.) |

Thanks all, appreciated, will look at (most of) them next time I'm on a high speed computer. FYI…I used Google translate for an online article by H. Zima re: the Battle of Hohenlinden. I've been doing a lot of corrections, mostly in regards to tense and the funny thing is that I've been using my "dog" French reading skills to spot and make the corrections, but it is a process. |

Andrew! One other tip! Whatever system you use, don't forget to take the translation provided, copy it, and paste into the box for the original text. Set the translation for the foreign language, then retranslate back to English. I promise this is the only way to be reasonably sure you're actually getting the right answer. Sometimes, you're going to have to adjust your original English phrase to get a sensible translation. From painful(ly funny!) experience, TVAG |
