Anyone using GW's War of the rings rules for generic fantasy? if so did you do anything different or just plug in troop types to the closest match? any sites out there detailing what they did?

I have not. However, I think they would work fine with some work.

I have actively considered using these rules for historical games set in Late Antiquity.

I have not used them with fantasy for the following reasons…

1) They are similar enough to WFB 8th Edition… both capable but not inspiring games… that choosing WFB opens up many more players to games.
2) I personally like Richard Borg games for mass combat.
3) Some house rules and game balance concerns would need addressing if you wished to play point-balanced games.

I like WotR for LOTR. One book. All the army statistics. Plays well. Easy enough. (That said, I host homebrew LOTR and fantasy field battles.)

I've written up army lists for Romans, Celts and Germans, I think I could dig them up from somewhere…

But the point is, it's very doable. But unfortunately, compared to the slew of good Ancients games from Hail Caesar, Impetus, War & Conquest, even Kings of War Historical, it is not a very good set at all. Our group house ruled it heavily even for our actual WoTR games.
