Hi keveman78, I have a little information on this but would be glad to learn more too. The siege was from 20th to 22nd March 1644, sopmetimes called Biddulph Old Hall. Lord Brereton was the Royalist defender of the house with abouit 160 men, while the besieging Parliamentarians were led by Sir William Brereton. I don't know much about the Parlt forces, but they included 'Colonel Ashanhurst' possibly Col. Randle Ashenhurst of Beard Hall Derbyshire or maybe Col. Ralph Assheton from Lancs?? The Parliamentarians also brought along a big siege cannon called 'Roaring Meg'. The siege is mentioned in 'Malbon's Memorials' which I think can be found online, Peter Gaunt's 'the Cromwellian Gazeteer', Sherwood's 'Civil Strife in the Midlands' and 'English Battlefields' by Michael Rayner. |
