15mm? 25/28mm? 6mm? 10mm? The new Pendraken models have me wondering how common 10mm modern is.

The Gray Ghost23 Aug 2012 12:20 p.m. PST

as I only skirmish I prefer 28mms

6/15

Everything I have is 6mm or 15mm, I refuse to buy in any other scales.

6mm for everything but skirmish, 15 for that.

Where is the snarky one to say these are not scales?

But to answer the question I'm with Dynaman – I'm going strictly 6mm/15mm…

Delta Vee23 Aug 2012 12:43 p.m. PST

28mm for me, cant realy see to paint smaller :)

28mm – pretty much skirmish only

One of the guys has 6mm for bigger games – like it, but I am sticking to 28mm myself

amwatts23 Aug 2012 12:49 p.m. PST

3mm!

I haven't started collecting yet because I keep flipping back and forth between scales. I like vehicles to be on the table, so I am leaning towards 15s, possibly 20s.

Personal logo Dye4minis Supporting Member of TMP23 Aug 2012 1:01 p.m. PST

12mm/N scale. Small enough to have lots on the table; large enough to see the details.

Uesugi Kenshin Supporting Member of TMP23 Aug 2012 1:06 p.m. PST

I once had a large 6mm collection but sold it as I never found rules I liked.

Id still like to do skirmish gaming in 15, 20 or 28mm. The main problem I see is the lack of modern buildings available in those scales. Unless you are gaming in the Arab world there really isnt much out there for modern cities.

If someone came out with a full line of nodern 28mm PLA minis with vehicles I would probably jump on them.

GeoffQRF23 Aug 2012 1:21 p.m. PST

Well, as 15mm isn't a scale, nominally 1:100 scale. :-)

Working on a 15mm PLA range for you.

Gaz004523 Aug 2012 1:29 p.m. PST

6 and 20mm for me, depending on the level of the game, FOF etc from Ambush Alley and Osprey have it in the bag for 'skirmish' in 20mm.
I tend to use simpler rules for the micro scale- keen on the two page 'wonder' rules from Panzer 8 this year, simple yet satisfying.
For 15mm modern style buildings check out the railway stuff….there's always a load on Ebay.

SECURITY MINISTER CRITTER23 Aug 2012 1:30 p.m. PST

6mm.

xtrema0123 Aug 2012 1:31 p.m. PST

6mm where 1" = 100m and 3mm where 1cm = 100m

Martin Rapier23 Aug 2012 1:42 p.m. PST

I don't really have a preferred, I do moderns in 2mm, 6mm and 15mm, everything from 1:1 platoonish skirmishy up to entire wars at 1 base = 1 brigade/regiment.

My Falklands stuff is all 15mm though.

Col Durnford Supporting Member of TMP23 Aug 2012 2:05 p.m. PST

28mm best for my usage.

Aapsych2023 Aug 2012 2:07 p.m. PST

Sparker23 Aug 2012 2:23 p.m. PST

Currently 20mm 1:72nd, which is frankly ludicrous for the armoured battlegroup actions of a 'cold war gone hot'!

Possibly a return to 15mm if Geoff's SLR armed British Infantry are up to snuff….

Close in skirmish is my fave.

Cops sized battles like fulda gap or Würzburg, but in 25 mm.

I'd guess that 10mm Modern gaming is relatively uncommon at the moment, due to there not being many ranges available, off the top of my head?

We had never planned on getting into it commercially, but all the requests on our Forum persuaded us into the Falkland's range, and I can see us expanding out a little from there to cover some of the other 80's conflicts in the future.

Dave Crowell23 Aug 2012 4:52 p.m. PST

15mm, with 3mm a close second. 15s because I already had lots of terrain etc in that size. 3mm because it allows larger actions to cover a lot of ground.

Generalstoner4923 Aug 2012 4:57 p.m. PST

28 mm for me. I am glad I resisted the urge to go 20 mm and stay with 28 mm. I think once 28 mm catches up some of its ranges and vehicles it will be just as good as the 20 mm ranges out there. I have nothing against 20 mm I just find it an odd scale to paint. It essentially takes me the same time to paint a 20mm figure as it does a 28 mm. If I had to choose another scale I would go 15 mm.

Of course that is for skirmish. For larger battles I really enjoy the 3 mm O8 line.

Airborne Engineer23 Aug 2012 4:59 p.m. PST

6MM, ground scale to weapons range looks silly to me in larger scale. I don't want a parking lot or tanks having knife fights.

Infantry are done and been on the website for s long time, APCs I've only been working om for the last few weeks. ;-)

we use 25mm (1/72) for close terrain and is a must for the complxxity of urban warfare. Ground scale for these actions ia 1"=10m, For more open terrain where AFV's are in the accendance we use 12mm (1:144) with a ground scale of 1mm=1m. This scale allows most linear features on a map (roads, hedges, streams)to be mapped. At the same time the smallest models (jeeps, Wiesals, etc)are still of a size that we can move primary weapons to bear and not look like blobs. If you compare 10mm and 12mm the percieved diferencence is large. Pendragon 10mm infantry fit well with 12mm as they are oversize. Depending wheather yuo are UK this is N gauge (UK 1:144 US 1:160).
Again "15mm" is often overscale so offers insuficient ground scale reduction for our type of simulation. While 12mm models are not that commen the range is growing steadily. New players like the one below are starting to come in and 3D printing is ideal for this scale.

In all N gauge has a lot to offer.

15mm figures and vehicles, 1/144 aircraft(UH-1D), and 1/200 scale larger aircraft (C130). Shipping 1/100 (LCM), and 1/144(submarine). Trains N scale.

Andoreth24 Aug 2012 5:37 a.m. PST

I recently started playing Force on Force and expected to use 28mm but I have found that 15mm figures look better, particularly when using vehicles as well. Helicopters which need to land are 1/100 scale while other aircraft tend to be 1/144.
