One of the wonderful things about the Internet is that it allows like minded fellows to come together and talk about wargames. One of the most frustrating things about the Internet is that it does not allow you to play wargames with these chaps, unless you wish to commit to some serious travel. With that in mind, I've been playing with a couple of options (Vassal, webcams, etc), but I finally managed to bite the bullet and play a game via FaceTime on my iPhone. I know a lot of chaps have been playing games via Skype, but I was experiencing some difficulty with that. But I discovered that the FaceTime App on my Iphone allowed me to make video calls via wi-fi and decided to give it a whirl. I managed to play a game of Command & Colours Napoleonics with a chum from Canada and brought the game to a conclusion in about an hour. Great fun and definately something I would try again. You can find a description of how we did it here. link And a battle report from my "guest" here. link I think quick play rules are a necessity, but I'm looking forward to giving this a go with Memoir '44. |

Pretty cool! Starting at about $50 USD, you can get an IP controlled pan/tilt/zoom video camera

We played the Battlestar Galactica boardgame with one of the players on the other side of the continent. We had his cards in a pair of cardholders with one web cam pointed at them. A second web cam was pointed at the board. It worked surprisingly well. No, he did not turn out to be a Cylon, but he should have! |

but I'm looking forward to giving this a go with Memoir '44. Are you aware there is an online M44 developed by Days of Wonder? It's very good and been out a while. It's the full game including numerous expansions, Eastern theatre, Pacific, Desert etc
nigh on all official maps plus loads that players have made. link It is pay to play but you get 50 free gets on sign-up to see if you like it. Each game can be 2 to 4 credits so it works out relatively cheap per game. |

It's a good game and I've been playing it for a while. I just prefer the experience of playing with toy soldiers and talking to a person rather than using the chat box. Horses for courses I suppose. |

A few years ago I joined a group that plays miniatures games online. We mostly play WW2 land, but we've also done naval and air, and might try other eras someday. You can find links to the gaming site and to records of most of our games here: donsden.webs.com/apps/links Some of our players are in the U.S. Eastern Time Zone, one's in the Central, I'm in the Pacific, and two who have played, including one regular, are in Britain! The owner of the site and server now lives in Mexico. The Olympics have nothing on us! |

Nothing new about this, except the technology. We used to call it play by mail(PBM)which you can do with board wargames which has hexes or squares to regulate movement. But for most miniature games, the ones with out some sort of grid, I don't see how this could work. |
