As a student at UBC (Vancouver) in the mid-80's, I played a Napoleonic system called "Corps d'Armee." I think the author of the rules was named Jim Conroy and he was from Vancouver, I think. Somewhere I still have the rules set, and if I can find them, I will post a photo. The minis were 5mm scale companies on 1/2"x1/2" bases for infantry, 1/2"x1" for cavalry and 1"x1" for artillery. 4 or 6 companies to a battalion, generally. You removed companies as casulaties. I still have some of the lead, the production quality was
uh
inconsistent. Once we fought Waterloo on a Saturday at the UBC game club. It was great fun. Does anyone know what happened with this group? Does anyone still use the rules? Does anyone know Jim Conroy? I've wondered about this for years. I have seen posts of a "Corps d'Armee" system published in England around 1989. I am pretty sure that this is not the same game. |

The UK version was written by Geoff Wooten under the WRG umbrella. A second edition was published by a cheeky Australian solicitor some time after. - Allan |

Used to play this quite a bit with 15mm figures back in the 90s. As I remember it worked quite well but maybe favoured the French over continental allies overmuch. Though I wouldn't swear to it as this might just have been my dodgy tactics! |

@138SquadronRAF: don't know if you were addressing me or not, but I am quite certain that we are talking about two different rules sets here. Mr. Wooten's discussion of A's, B's C's and D's sounds nothing like the game I played. |

Trotsylives, Actually old boy I was. The CdA rules used a morale system – similar to some of the earlier WRG sets – of classifying troops as A, B, C or D class. They used a scale 1:50 and 'bang your dead' causuallty removal, but it was based on sincle figures and not companies. The unique feature of the rules and what endeared them to me was the command and control system that rated generals on ability and charisma. If these are not the rules you were thinking of them I am sorry I could not help you further. |

:o) "the first thing we do, we kill all the lawyers", as the great man wrote. I have had other things to do in recent years (and there have been some really good rule sets out there since 1989) but Im wondering if there is room or interest out there for a proper updated Cd'A set? I'm taking early retirement so will have more time to devote to hobbies – I hope!
I was developing v2 – which is quite different from v1 – when Napoleon's Battles came out, and had some similar concepts in it to my v2. Then as NB faded the limited time I had available meant that instead of finishing off v2 I inputed to a couple of good rule sets – Frank Chadwick's innovative Volley and Bayonet and Wilbur Gray's excellent Age of Eagles. v2 is higher level, full Corps commander role, not single figure removal, highly streamlined morale, improved command and control with modifications to general ratings and orders system
v1 (New Zealand rip off) is available FOC on the Yahoo Groups EMWargames pages. |

Hi Geoff My apologies to Australian lawyers. It's the Kiwis we should be looking out for, then! ;-) You should find some time for a v2. Allan |

Geoff, I would definitely be interested in seeing more of your stuff in the form of a future Corps d'Armée revisitation. The original is a rules set I am very fond of. I'd be happy to provide feedback on it as well if you are looking for that sort of thing. Cheers, The Bandit |

That would be great thanks Bandit. Initially I'd appreciate your thoughts on how the original set could be improved for you, or what you feel is missing in current rules on the market. I am a supporting member so you can Email me via this forum, or drop me a line at geoffwoo99@yahoo.com. Cheers, Geoff |

Now that takes me back- I also remember playing those same rules with Jim Conroy at UBC at about the same time you did, so we may well have met. It does sound like two completely different games with the same name that we are talking about here. AFAIK, Jim's rules were never published. I do remember gaming with Jim via an invitation from Dave Morgan at Sentry Box West. At that time, his group was playing Napoleonics using The Complete Brigadier in 15mm at Phil Carpenter's place near 4th and Blenheim. Not sure if this was before or concurrent with his 5mm games at UBC. Man, that was a long time ago, so memory may be serving me false here! I do remember that he had a degree in Spanish history, and that accordingly he had a large 15mm Spanish army. No idea what he is up to these days. I may very well have a copy of the rules somewhere at my folks' home in Vancouver. But with me being in Tokyo right now that's no help to you, I'm afraid. |

Does anyone know where I can download the rules, the link that was referred to in that thread is dead. Thanks. |

@Stavka, you have it!! Jim always played Spanish in the 5mm battles, too. in any event, I have a copy of the rules and some of the old lead, as I stated above. i left UBC in spring of '87. the rules were published by CAC (Chasseurs a Cheval), Jim had a copyright, dated 1986. today i sent a copy of the rules to TelesticWarrior, in the UK. I'm really trying to find these guys. |

Ah just to add to a very old thread… the Corp d'armee rules that started this thread was done by Jim Conroy & Phil Carpenter back in 1987… that in turn was very loosely based on the 5mm Napoleonic rules played earlier in Vancouver (and cleaned up significantly). & was based on the very old minifig 5mm blocks. (Though Jim & Phil did there own version).. They did rules, a separate army list & some basic block miniatures. Now I have no idea if these were related in any way to Geoff's version as I have never seen them. And lastly Sentry Box was based on 4th ave in Vancouver…(NW of UBC) not in Richmond (which was in turn probably Imperial Hobbies Which is still going strong) |
