Excuse me for the thread-o-mancy, but I just recently picked up copy of White Dwarf issue 107, and was reminded of this thread. This issue contains a full Norse army list for WHFB 3rd edition, and is to my knowledge the last "official" norse army list published (there may have been an unofficial 4th edition list in Citadel Journal, but I haven't got one).
The unit types in the list are:
- Huscarls (elite warriors)
- Bondsman warriors (regular humans)
- Bondsman archers (bows or longbows)
- Thralls (slaves with slings or javelins)
- Berserkers
- Weres (shapechanging wolf-men)
- Norse dwarf warriors
- Norse dwarf berserkers
- Norse dwarf troll and giant slayers
Additionally, as per other lists of the era, there are options for monstrous hosts (including giant wolves), allies (old worlders and fimir (!?!) and mercenaries (old worlders, ogres and giants). As for the norse, the weapon and armour options generally tend to be hand weapons, spears, two-handed weapons (great weapons), shields and/or light armour, with some units having access to additional hand weapons, throwing axes or throwing spears.
If I had to pick a 6th edition army list to represent Norse, I would probably pick the Empire, supported by various entries from the Dogs of War list, renamed where appropriate (the Kislev ally list is of little use, as it had just a single infantry option, with bows and great axes). This could provide something like following the following options from the Empire book and DoW lists:
- Warlord (elector count)
- Sage master (wizard lord)
- Chieftain (captain)
- Sage (wizard)
- Priest (warrior priest) (*)
- Bondsmen (spearmen)
- Hirdsmen (swordsmen)
- Warbands (free company)
- Bondsman archers (archers)
- Huntsmen (huntsmen)
- Huscarls (greatswords) (**)
- Crazed (flagellants)
- Norse dwarfs (DoW dwarves)
- Berserkers (DoW Norse marauders)
- Bearmen of Urslo (DoW regiment of reknown)
- Ogres (DoW ogres)
- Giant (DoW giant, see WD 316)
(*) = for warrior priest, I think the Ulrican priest option, which appeared later in WD, is more fitting than the basic sigmarite version in the rulebook
(**) = for huscarls, I would replace the full plate armour of the greatswords with heavy armour (mail hauberk) and drop the cost by 1 or 2 points
Perhaps it might be appropriate to allow DoW dwarves and Norse marauders to be picked as special choices in the list above, as most of the special choices from the Empire list are not appropriate. For those wanting to look for more options from the DoW list, there might also be the light cavalry option (for mounted scouts) and the duellists (skirmishers with close combat or thrown weapons).
Besides the plain Empire army list, it might be worth considering the variant army lists for Cult of Ulric (Warhammer Chronicles 2004) and Defenders of Middenheim (Storm of Chaos). These contain a few additional unit options that could be of interest, such as the Warriors of Ulric (veteran warriors with great weapons or two hand weapons), Wolf-kin (maybe representing crazed veteran warriors or actual were-men) and Hunting Hounds (wolf or dog packs).
One aspect that I did not give much thought to was the Saga animosity rules from the 3rd edition, which do not have a close equivalent, other than the orc & goblin animosity rules. I would probably simply skip the saga animosity, as I found those rules a bit odd in the 3rd edition too.
