Bob Murch has released beautiful Thugees and the sergeants and Gunga for the Gunga Din skirmish game. This is the small battle at the beginning of the movie that I want to do.

I can get by without the mounted figures as they seem to just ride into the town and dismount to fight. I'm thinking of doing this with song of drums and shakos updated to the 1890s.

What I do need are recommendations for the regular Indian troops that the sergeants command. This is a Royal engineers expedition, the sergeants are in the engineers. These figures look more like zouaves than like typical Indians of the day: baggy pants loose shirts, fez like turban.

Looking for suggestions as to what to use for these guys. Also how to paint them. Anybody have a colorized version of Gunga din, what are they in that?

25 mm for those who don't know Bob Murch figures.

Bob,
I'm pretty sure they are all in khaki. I'm not sure though whether the dress of the Sepoys is accurate at all. It might be more Hollywood than History. I think the Sergenat would have had grey shirts under their jackets.

I finally found a picture of the Indian troops in the first battle.

If you can get a copy of the DVD, in the special features there's a video of the filming of the movie in 16mm color filmed by, if I remember correctly, the director's family(??). It's very enlightening.

Hi, Bob, those guys look a LOT like Copplestone's recently re-released Zanzibari regulars with a few pouches added on.

They certainly don't look like Indian troops! Just Hollywood, I suppose, although they could get uniforms right at times, viz the Indian troops in "The Charge of the Light Brigade", the Errol Flynn version.

I'd love to see Bob Murch do a pack of these Hollywood sepoys.

I found this illustration of the Queen's Own Sappers and Miners which is really close.

Sorry, Queen's Own *Madras* Sappers and Miners. No idea what figures to use.

I second Bob Murch making some to complete the collection!
