There was some discussion a while ago about non-random rules for miniature games, and Ritter was mentioned. Well it's available again at hamsterpress.net. You have to sign up before you can purchase anything, but the Ritter and Ritter en Spiel rules are only $5.00 USD each. I placed an order and service was prompt and friendly. Other games are available at the site, too. |

These are interesting rules, even simpler than DBA. Where DBA armies are a function of troops types – killer armies tend to have blades and knights rather than light horse – Ritter is really about army stats rather than troop/weapon types. Each army has three numbers. One is the number of moves per turn, the second is number of attacks the army can make per turn and the third is number of units that can be lost in a game. If you have have high numbers, your army is tough. Mongols are killers in Ritter because they have high numbers (a cohesive, tough army) rather than rules favoring horse archers. It's an interesting idea. I have not yet figured out how to port that concept into a slightly more granular game using dice. It's worth the price just for the rules concepts. You could also play a fast campaign using these, since most battles are over in 30 minutes or so. |
