He told me to "shut up". This is a clear violation of the FAQ and Forum rules.
Since I rarely hit the [!] button (and it isn't working anyway… grin), I stifled the moronic toad.

Now, should The editor go through all the fuss and feathers to track this down and DH the foul miscreant, I will withdraw my stifle.
Or, should it seem that he might possibly have something interesting to say, I might unstifle him then too.
No sense piling on.
In fact I am NOT complaining that he told me to "shut up". I am handling it myself.
IMPORTANT CLUE: He is not a Supporting Mamber, so I could not PM him to tell him how hurtful he was, and how it ruined my day. grin It made my teddy bear cry.

In any event, he is not harmed, I drew no blood, nor is his credit score impacted in any way. No harm, no foul.

So, cue the shrieking accusations of my being thin-skinned. All I did was roll up the window on my limo, so I did not have to smell the drunk hobo on the sidewalk, and told the chauffeur to run him over if he does not get out of the way.
Another apt comparison is that I turned my channel off that particularly obnoxious shock jock.

Where is it written that I HAVE to read what someone writes?

Asking impertinent questions, the answers to which were none of their damned business…. ;-)

Mako1106 Aug 2012 8:23 a.m. PST

I don't have the time to bother with stifling others, even if I disagree vociferously with them.

They are many other fish to fry (I prefer thick-cut cod by the way), but prawns in beer batter are delicious too……

Disagreeing has nothing to do with it.
That is not the purpose of the stifle.
I was dealingwith rudeness.

Fried catfish is good too.

Last person I stifled was someone whose comments were getting under my skin, so I stifled in self defense (else I would have landed in the dawghouse). I have since removed the stifle.

Damon.

Never handed one out. Got four back mind…

14Bore Supporting Member of TMP06 Aug 2012 8:41 a.m. PST

That is your prerogative. Stifle as necessary, beats going to the DH if you lose your cool and post something as offensive as the person is doing to you.

Zyphyr06 Aug 2012 8:42 a.m. PST

My last was Big Mean Elf. Anyone who was around at the time knows the behavior that caused it, and for anyone who wasn't the reasons don't matter.

elsyrsyn06 Aug 2012 8:44 a.m. PST

Can't recall ever having stifled anyone.

I've only stifled myself, years ago; except once, when a (no longer with us) TMPer was perversely asking for stifles so that his shot at becoming Number One would succeed….

Klebert L Hall06 Aug 2012 8:53 a.m. PST

I don't stifle.

flooglestreet06 Aug 2012 8:57 a.m. PST

I stifled MFO eht nhoJ because anybody who picks that stupid a handle is incapable of writing anything of interest to me. I also stifled a person with an uncanny knack for being annoying. Said entities are no longer in TMP I believe.

Texas Jack06 Aug 2012 8:58 a.m. PST

I once stifled a man in Reno just to watch him shut up. Seriously though, I stifled a person on the Napoleonics board once, but then unstifled him because I was missing a lot of funny stuff.

Martin Rapier06 Aug 2012 9:03 a.m. PST

I am usually fairly easy going and don't bother with stifles, however having learned my lesson that I can't publically call neo-nazi trolls, neo-nazi trolls, I stifled him/her/it instead.

I suppose I should have complained about the original thread, but it had already been through the mill with others far more eloquent than me.

I still get a warm glow of statisfaction when I see his/her/its feeble contributions tagged as 'deleted'.

Does that make me a bad person?

Not at all. grin

stupidity

The Beast Rampant06 Aug 2012 9:14 a.m. PST

Repeatedly bringing up politics when not at all pertinent.

I am not against stifling, and like John, don't really get what the big deal is. I like it. I check in on mine every so often; other than losing one some time back, mine hasn't moved in quite a while. If it spiked, I would wonder why, and might tone some things down.

Sometime back, someone (Warbeads, I think) suggested everyone storm their own Bastille and release the inmates. A few months later, pretty much the same recidivists were in the pokey again. Well, there you go.

dglennjr06 Aug 2012 9:15 a.m. PST

I think I've given out 1 stifle, mainly because the person was being mean, nasty, and nothing worthwhile to say.

I've received 3 stifles, and for the life of me, can't figure out who or why anyone would stifle me? I merely post stuff about games, miniatures, and terrain and certainly wouldn't be called 'controversial' by any means.

I've only handed out a few to people who are just over-the-top offensive. I simply don't want to wade through their garbage.

kreoseus206 Aug 2012 9:38 a.m. PST

Spamming.

I have managed to pick up two new stiffles this week, and I havent had a row with anyone… I was obviously either silly or obtuse. Or both.

Gwydion06 Aug 2012 9:41 a.m. PST

'Stifle'
Silly name.
Silly idea.
If you don't like it, don't read it.
If its a personal attack (and the complaint button isn't working) write a PM to Bill and let him know.
If he doesn't delete it, – you can always…not read it again!

Martin, I wouldn't stifle a neo nazi troll even if I knew one grin It doesn't make you a bad person if you do, but you do miss the warm glow of moral, intellectual and cultural superiority you get when you read such drivel.

CeruLucifus06 Aug 2012 9:43 a.m. PST

I just use Back or Page Down. Life is too short to worry about stifling people.

goragrad06 Aug 2012 9:44 a.m. PST

Have never seen anything worth stifling. To easy to just skim past the postings.

Gonsalvo06 Aug 2012 9:53 a.m. PST

Being persistently critical without ever being remotely helpful, even when asked. That's only the second I've ever issued, and my only current one. I'll probably reverse it before long, as I did with my first one, which was for essentially the same reason in a completely different situation.

nazrat06 Aug 2012 9:56 a.m. PST

"If you don't like it, don't read it."

Why, that's EXACTLY what a Stifle does for you. Miracle of modern technology and all that, eh wot? 8)=

And my last one given was for an arseclown who constantly pushes I Ain't Been Shot, Mum saying that the rules set I like isn't worth playing because of it's name(!). Ignorance like that deserves to be permanently ignored.

Personal logo John the OFM Supporting Member of TMP06 Aug 2012 10:00 a.m. PST

But, it's there and VISIBLE!
If in some small way I can diminish the self-esteem of that idiot by increasing his stifle count, I will have done my duty.

Personal logo Wolfshanza Supporting Member of TMP06 Aug 2012 10:01 a.m. PST

If I ever give one, I'll let ya know grin I'd rather just blow razberries at the screen when I see something I don't like ? Time for my meds evil grin

sneakgun06 Aug 2012 10:13 a.m. PST

I still think that stifling is silly, like like and dislike on facebook.

Roderick Robertson Fezian06 Aug 2012 10:20 a.m. PST

Never stifled anyone on TMP, but I did send one person's emails automatically to the Delete folder for a while on email.

religon06 Aug 2012 10:24 a.m. PST

I still think that stifling is silly, like like and dislike on facebook.

Small correction. There is no dislike on Facebook. You must comment on a post if you wish to challenge another Facebook member. TMP members use the stifle button in various manners including as a dislike button.

Herr Raisin06 Aug 2012 10:26 a.m. PST

Someone who won't stop whining about a convention he likes having moved from his favorite place.

Sundance06 Aug 2012 10:32 a.m. PST

The individual concerned was annoying.

I have never stifled.

21eRegt06 Aug 2012 11:03 a.m. PST

I have never stifled anyone and don't plan to. I came close once when one person just wouldn't let it go, but since he occasionally posts something worthwhile I didn't want to miss it.

John the OFM wrote: "If in some small way I can diminish the self-esteem of that idiot by increasing his stifle count, I will have done my duty."

But that presumes he: A. Gives a rip about his stifle count. B. Checks his stifle count. and C. Doesn't take a perverse pride in being "the most annoying man on TMP."

A couple were for the ability to work an anti-American slant into a thread at the drop of a hat( and for the smug superiority that oozed from said slants).

Saves me from replying with something DH worthy.

I have also been tempted to DH people for anti-Steely Dan remarks but pity stayed my hand. :)

RavenscraftCybernetics06 Aug 2012 1:41 p.m. PST

I stiffle rude people.

JSchutt06 Aug 2012 1:54 p.m. PST

I am probably on your stiffle list… but I don't bother to stiffle anyone. I find I can pick and choose who and what I want to read without technological assistance. After all everyone has a bad day from time to time and those folks not worth reading, which aren't all that many are easy to remember. Sometimes though it seems there's more spurious logic going on here than in a Star Trek episode.

nsolomon9906 Aug 2012 2:26 p.m. PST

Long time ago – the bloke was repeatedly trying to justify pedophilia in one of its forms. I'm a father. Nuff said.

Delthos06 Aug 2012 3:30 p.m. PST

I just breeze on past annoying posts and don't bother with stifling. Just because someone says something annoying one time, doesn't mean they won't have something useful to say in my next post I read.

Personal logo enfant perdus Supporting Member of TMP06 Aug 2012 3:31 p.m. PST

What a strange coincidence. My last stifle also happened to be Doug, during the horror that was the Nubile War.

Gwydion06 Aug 2012 3:48 p.m. PST

"If you don't like it, don't read it."

Why, that's EXACTLY what a Stifle does for you. Miracle of modern technology and all that, eh wot? 8)=

Not EXACTLY – it stops you reading the annoying post, but it also stops you reading everything else that person writes which you may enjoy reading – if only for the warm glow of having your prejudices confirmed each time.

RazorMind06 Aug 2012 4:19 p.m. PST

Have never stifled and until now did not realize I had a stifle count, apparently I have 11 and have no idea why.

Kaoschallenged06 Aug 2012 4:58 p.m. PST

Meh. Nobody's business but my own in regards as to why and who. Robert

pigbear06 Aug 2012 7:04 p.m. PST

I once stifled a man in Reno just to watch him shut up.

Classic. I think I'll remember that every time I see another stifle thread.
