On a whim I have just finished 3 horse holders and 12 horses for my NWF Indian Army, with 9 dismounts (dimounts not quite finished).

How often do players actually dismount their cavalry units and use them to cover an advance or withdrawl

I haven't done so yet. I was more thinking of using such as a force to out flank an enemy. Or otherwise like mounted infantry.
Thanks for reminding me about this as my birthday is on the horizon.

I don't think I have ever dismounted my cavalry.

I started dismounting cavalry after using mounted infantry for a while. Since I never have enough MI tried using cavalry to cover withdrawals, which I seem to need to do too often.

My Boers "mount" and "dismount".

But I suppose you don't really call them proper cavalry.

I do it all the time. The fire combat while mounted is ineffective.

That said, I also use them with mounted fire to cover withdrawals.

Yes!

Use them as a vanguard to secure terrain or a flanking force to pin prick the main body of enemy troops.

Yep, my Boers, British Mounted Infantry and Dragoons dismount often. Have known British players in our Boer War games to dismount an entire cavalry brigade.
