hi, it transpires that as usual i have goofed, there are two units of grenadiers, one Leib and the other Boismorel's, which i thought wrongly were one in the same. So were both of these dressed in red (which i believe to be the case and why i made my school boy error) or have i made another error. thanks jon |

I doubt grenadier companies were wholly dressed in red and I imagine somebody has misinterpted a reversed colour uniform of an officer or NCO ansd this error perpetuated from a very early time

OK, I'll start the ball rolling again! Boismorel's Grenadier Battalion were the 'Red Grenadiers" and did wear red coats. They were intended as part of a 3 Battalion Regiment of "Foreign Guards" for the Elector, and their organisation was to mirror that of the existing Leibregiment (two battalions of musketeers, one of grenadiers). In the event, when war came, only the grenadier battalion of these foreign guards had yet been raised, and the other two never materialised. The Leib grenadiers were one of the three battalions of the Leibregiment, and wore light blue coats. All of the above from reading Horsley's translation of 'The Chronicles of an Old Campaigner', the memoirs of Colonel de la Colonie, who commanded the red grenadiers at the Schellenberg. Mollinary |

The only thing I can add to Molinary's explanation is that Boismorel grenadiers wore hats at least during early stages of campaign and they carried white flag with motto "VAE SPECTANTI". |
