Hello ! I've been looking for a while for a site (ideally) or a book (that I could buy in Belgium or via Amazon) on 1St Bull Run, especially the flags and uniforms of the various regiments engaged that day.

I've been rereading the Wargaming in History vol 6 and while helpful on the "special" uniforms of certain regiments and incredibly helpful on the battle itself and the OOB, it contains no info on flags. I've also been looking over the net but apparently, my google-fu is weak.

Thanks in advance !

That would be "Manassass" suh….
Only a dirty Yankee would call it Bull Run, since we whipped 'em there both times…

Murphy, begging your pardon suh. I'm not sure what the rest of the South may call the town but we in Virginia call the place Manassas not "Manassass."

It's like the possessive plural of "princess" -- we know how to do it, we are just not sure when to stop.

I'm Belgian so I'm obviously a tourist. :-) And history is written by the victor after all… I remembered about the Dixie card set this morning. It's great for uniforms but flags are the main difficulty for now.

Histoire et Collections recently did a guide for First Manassas. Only 14 uniform plates, but at least it should be easy for you to find.

A start might be "Flags of the Confederacy, The: An Illustrated History" by Devereaux Cannon. This covers the entire Civil War.

A good default for the Confederates is to have them fly their state flag.

When I can't find a specific flag used for 1st Bull Run, I use the state flag. Someone still needs to do a detailed book on the flags and uniforms of 1st Bull Run. Such an interesting battle in so many ways, for wargaming. How many other times were battles so equal on both sides. The Union could have won, but screwed up. It easily could have gone either way!

We do have a US and CS set for Bull Run/Manassass.

As one of the authors, delighted that you found the book 'incredibly helpful'. However, we could find no single authoritative source for the flags. In researching Wargaming in History Vol 6, which probably began 20 years ago, the majority of sources suggested that State flags predominated. If a regiment was organised enough to get a Confederacy Flag it still carried its State flag I seem to recall. Virginia Regts, being closest to home and resupply of the latest version of the flag, may well have had both. I agree that Flags of the Confederacy is a very good place to begin.
